We’ve reached a peak! The light has been illuminating darkness for longer and longer up to this point, and the pinnacle of DAY is felt at the solstice.

Fire, sun, hope, ideas, action.

We are beginning to realize all that has come from our months of toiling, building, and growing. Do you feel it?

Perhaps it looks like spontaneity or the excitement for HOURS of adventure that are available each day you open your eyes to the sun.

Revel in it. The days of reflection will return. For now, continue to bask in the abundance, the movement, the stretching, the heat.

Happy solstice, folks. ☀

PS. Want to talk about the cycles we experience as humans on the planet? Reach out about a workshop on permaculture - it will not disappoint.

This spring, our Stewardship Team completed 2 pruning training sessions with Jen at Radiant Leaf Consulting. Thank you, Jen! 😁

As ecological landscapers, we have a very trusting nature... Mother Nature has it handled, and we can just let things be. However, one of our core values is Conscious Curiosity, as there is always more to learn than we know at the outset. You don't know what you don't know!

When it comes to pruning, the health of our trees and shrubs relies on our intervention to clear out dead, diseased, and dying branches. It is also our role to support their structure so the ornamental and edible woody plants we love can thrive for decades without becoming problem plants down the line.

Jen's expertise, sense of humor and action-oriented approach made for some great on-the-job learning for all. 🛠

A big thank you to Jen for sharing her knowledge and to our wonderful client for allowing us to use their beautiful landscape as the perfect outdoor classroom.

The best landscapes are always growing & so are we! 🌱

3 Tips for Plant Watering
Do these are your plants will make it through the critical establishment period with ease. 💦

1. Water at the roots!
Plants do not need water on their leaves - they need water at their roots. Use drip irrigation or hand water at the root zone. Wet leaves will lead to evaporation before the water reaches the soil and can increase risk of fungal disease in the heat of the summer.

2. Water with your morning coffee and evening tea. ☕
Watering when the sun is low decreases evaporation risk and allows the plants to soak up the water before/after the heat of the day.

3. Water deeply, less often.
Shallow watering encourages shallow root growth, leaving your plants' lifeforce cooking in the topsoil. Watering deeply will encourage downward root growth, supporting the resilience and drought tolerance of plants that can source water from deeper in the soil, where it is more readily available during stretches of drought.

If you see these signs, you need to assess your soil health!

Before you go applying your 10-10-10, let's think about the root of the plant health problem.

1. If water pools on the surface instead of soaking in, or you can't easily push a finger into the soil, your ground is compacted. Roots can't breathe, and nutrients can't move.

2. When plants look starved (pale, yellow leaves) no matter what you do, the issue often isn't what you're feeding them - it's that the soil biology isn't there to help them absorb it.

3. Soil is bare and rock hard between plants. Exposed soil bakes in the sun, loses moisture fast, and becomes a hostile environment for the microbes that make nutrients available to your plants.

Dumping more fertilizer on unhealthy soil is like giving a malnourished person pre-workout.

Want sustained health, rather than a growth spurt?

Apply mulch - wood chips, straw, or shredded leaves protect and feed your soil as they break down.
Get roots in the soil - groundcovers and cover crops keep soil cool, moist, and alive.
Compost - adds the microbial life that makes everything work.

Not sure what your soil needs? Reach out for a soil test!

There is so much we don't know about the world around us. But there is also so much we DO know!

One thing we know for sure: pollinators are critical for the survival of so many species on our planet - from plants to animals to us.

Supporting native pollinators through planting native plants is a simple, easy, low-cost way to support the environment.

Added benefits include getting your hands dirty and soaking up some vitamin D!

Not sure where to start? We have tons of resources, from blogs to in-person classes.
