When a tree comes down, the stump that's left behind is more than a cosmetic problem. Understanding what's happening below grade helps explain why grinding is worth doing — and what happens if you skip it.

A freshly cut stump still has a live root system for some time after removal. Depending on the species, that system can push up new sprouts from the root crown and lateral roots for months or even years. Oaks, maples, and many ornamental species are particularly persistent. Beyond regrowth, an aging stump becomes a host for wood-decay fungi and certain wood-boring beetles that can spread to neighboring healthy trees over time. Honey fungus in particular, which is common in Middle Tennessee, uses decaying root material as a pathway to living trees.

Stump grinding removes the visible stump and the upper portion of the root system below grade, eliminating the regrowth point and the decay habitat at the surface level. The resulting wood chips can be used as mulch, and the area can be reseeded or replanted relatively quickly. It's a straightforward service that closes the loop on a tree removal properly.
