The Graff Residence is out for bid, so here is the inside of the house you have been seeing from the yard.

The main volume goes up two stories, it is vaulted capturing the north and south daylight with two dormers. The whole daylight strategy in one move.

Light comes in above head height, crosses the ceiling, and reaches the middle of the plan where a window in a wall never could.

The living room does the opposite on purpose. Coffered ceiling built down, arched
niches either side of the hearth, a lower and quieter room three steps from the tallest one in the house.

We never hand over one drawing and call it the answer.

The Schulke sits on Crooked Lake near Crivitz, and it started the way every commission here starts. Two complete concept schemes, drawn far enough that the owners could actually compare two futures instead of imagining one.

Scheme one holds the street with a calm gabled front and opens up to the back. Scheme two takes the same rooms and pushes the massing, trading formality for drama in the roofline.

They picked, and we carried the winner into a full construction set. Twelve forty on the main level, eight fifty five upstairs, heated slab, facing water.

Choosing is easier with real drawings in front of you.

The deck on the back of this house already had the view, the afternoon sun, and the grade falling away to the west. What it did not have was two months at each end of the year when anyone actually sat out there.

The client has a 15’x15’ deck in good condition and wants to add a 3 seasons room to it. We started the project with them dreaming about what the addition could be. Following a site visit taking thorough measurements, scans, and analysis of the existing structure. We drew a proposal explaining the process from designing to constructing the addition based on the existing conditions of the deck and potential design opportunities.

One scheme utilizes a single pitch roof for efficient construction. The other sets wider screen windows on a stone knee wall, hipped roof above. Both weathertight when then windows are closed, fully open to nature when they’re open.

We are designing it, general contracting it, and building it. One agreement, one phone number, nobody handing the drawing off to a stranger. The ultimate form of quality control.

Part four. This is where one Shell Loft becomes two.

Check out the Shell Loft v.1 and look at the pergola off the end of the house. It was designed as a future attachment point. Enclose it, glaze it, and that frame becomes a room. Set a second shell down on the far side and the room becomes a node, holding the two arches apart and joining them in the same move.

2,180 square feet now. Kitchen, living and dining under the first arch. Bedroom suite and great room under the second. A four-season room between them that doubles as the front entry.

The node is the part worth watching. Any number of shells, any angle, any distance.

Part three. The part most people never get to see.

A design is only worth what it can be built from. Every Usonia House project ends the same way, with a complete permit ready construction set: foundation and floor plans, roof plan, elevations, building and wall sections, assembly isometrics and the details that make a builder confident instead of creative.

The sheets below are a part of a real set with vital information taken off. What you are looking at is the level of finish, not the specifics.
That is what separates a drawing from a house. It is also why our builds go up fast and come in where we said they would.

Part two. This is where the shell becomes a house.

One 24-foot steel arch eliminates the need for 2 walls and carries the roof and weather skin in a single move. No truss package, no gable to frame. What that saves goes straight into the things you actually live with.

768 square feet on the main floor with a 270 square foot loft bedroom tucked under the curve. Bath, laundry, pantry and mechanical stack tight against one end, which frees the whole opposite end to open to glass and the covered patio past it.
The arch narrows as it rises, so the section decides where the loft can go. Function first, again.

A rough framed house in days, not months.

The Prairie House is drawn to be assembled, not improvised. Panels arrive numbered and in order. Nobody is cutting rafters on a sawhorse in the rain, and nobody is waiting on the one guy who knows how the roof goes together. A small team of general laborers can stand the whole shell up.

Every day a house sits open to the sky is a day it costs money and takes weather. Closing it in fast is not a gimmick, it is most of the savings.

Built indoors. Assembled on your land. Still yours, still custom.

Every house we draw starts with one idea worth chasing. This one started with a shell.
The result is the lowest price home you can build per square foot.

First, we looked at what a shell actually does. The outside is rigid and pointed and self
contained, a hard back turned to the weather. The inside is the opposite, smooth warm and organic, curved around the thing it protects. We believe this is the exact contrast
a shelter is supposed to be. So we let the form follow that function instead of the other way around.

The curved side profile became the arch. The horizontal striping became the ribs.
Nothing on this building is decoration, every element has a job.
A shell is never only armour. In nature it is something other life grows on and
into. That is the relationship we want families to have with our homes.

This is the Shell Loft.

Two thousand square feet, and not one of them wasted.

The Howen is a single story family home under one generous gable. Living, dining and kitchen share a single volume with daylight coming in off both long walls, so the middle of the house never goes dark.

Two bedrooms today. The third is already framed for, waiting on the family to need it.

The framing is where the money is. Material efficient techniques cut waste and labor while landing a tighter, better insulated shell than conventional practice. You spend less and get more building.

Custom does not have to mean expensive. It mostly means somebody counted.

Every piece of this house was drawn to fit on a trailer.

That sounds like a small constraint. It is actually the whole design. Wall panels, floor units, roof units, all of it sized so a standard flatbed can carry it.

Once that rule holds, the house stops caring where the site is. A lot two hours off the highway. A lake road that washes out every April. Forty acres with no address on it yet.

Most new home construction requires an easy site and a deep bench of local trades. This one does not. The truck gets there, the pieces come off it in order, and the building goes up.

The Usonia Prairie House, model UM-601.
