When starting plants it’s great to know which planting zone you are in. The zones give you the window of time for a growing season between the last frost of spring and the first frost of fall.

With being in zone 4b here in Central Wisconsin you need to start certain plants indoors to give them time to mature and produce before the first frost of fall comes.

By starting them indoors you are giving them a great head start, and many times you will need to transplant to larger containers to allow the plant to continue to grow, if you don’t the plant may become stagnant and wither.

Here’s an example of plants that were planted at the same time. One was transplanted to a larger container to allow more growth while one was left in its smaller container. The larger pot allowed the roots to grow which allowed the plant to become bigger and more full vs keeping it in the small container where its growth has continued upwards but not so much becoming lush like the larger one.

Enough chicken-talk for now, let’s talk about seed starting! 🌱 With it being only a little over 6 weeks away from our last frost date, you can start seeds indoors so they’re ready to transplant once the danger of frost is gone.

Some of these include herbs, tomatoes, peppers, and even some flowers.

💡 If you can, be sure to use some type of light source to help keep your seedling from becoming “leggy” as it first begins to grow. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on grow lights, some small shops lights will do the trick as well!
