Before a single wall gets closed up, the plumbing gets pressurized and left sitting.

If that needle moves overnight, something in there is leaking, and we find it now, while every pipe is still easy to reach. Once drywall goes on, the same leak costs ten times as much to chase.

Ask your builder whether your plumbing was pressure tested, and whether anyone took a photo of the gauge.

Same house as yesterday's post. Six weeks later.

Yesterday it was studs and open ceilings. Today it's finished rooms, and almost none of the work that got it here shows up in a photo: walls straightened, plumbing and wiring rerouted around what demo uncovered, floors flattened so tile has something true to sit on.

Straight grout lines aren't luck. They're what the ugly stages paid for.

Whole-home renovation, mid demolition. A week earlier every one of these walls was covered, and behind each one was something nobody had looked at since the house was built.

Demo day is the most honest day of a renovation. It's where the plans meet whatever the last three owners actually did.

A roof goes up in one morning.

Trusses are built off site, trucked in, and lifted into place one at a time in a fixed order. The crane is the most expensive thing on site that day, so everything else gets done before it shows up: walls braced, layout marked, hardware ready.

By lunch, a stack of lumber in the yard is a roof you can see from the street.

You can stand in one room of this house and see every other room. Next week you won't be able to.

Framing is the only stage where the whole house is out in the open. Every wall, every opening, every run of wire and pipe still has somewhere visible to go, and moving any of it is cheap.

That's why we walk it now. Once insulation and drywall go up, a two-inch mistake stops being a hammer fix and becomes a demolition job.

Women reached 11.3 percent of the construction workforce in 2025, the highest share in twenty years.

Inside the field trades, the numbers are different: 4 percent of construction and extraction workers, and 3 percent of installation, maintenance and repair workers.

What would move those field numbers most: earlier exposure, better recruiting, different schedules, jobsite culture, properly fitted safety equipment, or a clearer path into leadership?

In 2025 women were 11.3 percent of the construction workforce, the highest share in twenty years.

The part that headline leaves out: women are 4 percent of construction and extraction workers, and 3 percent of installation, maintenance and repair. Nearly all the growth has been in office, professional and management roles, not the field trades where the shortage is worst.

So what would actually change the field number? Earlier exposure to the trades. Better recruiting. Different schedules. Jobsite culture. Safety gear that fits. A real path into leadership.

People who actually work in construction, which one matters most?
