🌳☀️ PHOTOSYNTHESIS: HOW TREES TURN SUNLIGHT INTO ENERGY

Every leaf in a tree’s canopy is part of an incredibly complex biological system.

Photosynthesis is the process that allows trees to capture light energy and convert it into chemical energy that can be used for growth, maintenance, defense, reproduction, and recovery from stress.

🔬 THE PROCESS

Photosynthesis occurs primarily within specialized structures called chloroplasts, which contain chlorophyll and other pigments capable of absorbing light.

Using sunlight, trees combine:

☀️ Light energy
💧 Water absorbed through the root system
🌬️ Carbon dioxide entering the leaves

to produce carbohydrates that store chemical energy, while oxygen is released as a byproduct.

But the process is considerably more complex than simply “trees make oxygen.”

🌿 STOMATA & GAS EXCHANGE

Leaves contain microscopic pores called stomata.

When stomata are open, carbon dioxide can diffuse into the leaf for photosynthesis. At the same time, water v***r escapes through transpiration.

This creates an important physiological tradeoff:

A tree needs CO₂ to photosynthesize, but opening its stomata also increases water loss.

During drought or extreme heat, trees may partially or completely close their stomata to conserve water. This reduces CO₂ uptake and consequently decreases photosynthetic activity.

🌱 THE ROOT–CANOPY CONNECTION

Photosynthesis may occur primarily in foliage, but healthy root systems are essential to the process.

Roots supply the water and mineral nutrients necessary to support leaf function.

Compacted soil, root damage, drought, poor drainage, or oxygen-depleted soils can reduce water uptake—eventually affecting photosynthesis throughout the canopy.

🌳 LEAF AREA MATTERS

A tree’s canopy is its primary photosynthetic surface.

Removing excessive live foliage through improper or overly aggressive pruning reduces the tree’s ability to capture light and manufacture carbohydrates.

This is one reason practices such as tree topping can create significant physiological stress.

After severe canopy loss, a tree may respond by rapidly producing epicormic shoots as it attempts to rebuild photosynthetic capacity.

⚡ CARBOHYDRATES ARE CRITICAL

The carbohydrates produced through photosynthesis support:

• Root development
• New foliage and shoot growth
• Wood formation
• Reproduction
• Compartmentalization and defense
• Response to insects and pathogens
• Recovery following injury or pruning
• Energy needs during dormancy and spring growth

Successful tree establishment begins with choosing the right planting season. While container-grown trees can technically be planted throughout much of the year, planting during periods of lower environmental stress can significantly improve root establishment and long-term performance.

🍂 FALL — PREFERRED PLANTING SEASON
Fall is one of the most favorable times for tree planting. Cooler air temperatures reduce moisture loss and transplant stress, while soil temperatures can remain suitable for root development after above-ground growth has slowed.

🌱 LATE WINTER & EARLY SPRING — ALSO IDEAL
Planting while trees are dormant or before active spring growth allows the root system time to begin establishing before the demands of summer heat.

☀️ SUMMER — HIGHER STRESS PERIOD
Summer planting is possible, particularly with container-grown material, but newly planted trees require careful water management. High temperatures, increased transpiration, and periods of drought can place significant stress on an undeveloped root system.

❄️ WINTER — CONDITION DEPENDENT
Dormant trees may be successfully planted during winter when the soil is workable and not frozen or excessively saturated.

📍 In North Carolina, fall through early spring generally provides the most favorable conditions for establishing newly planted trees.

Proper timing is only part of successful establishment. Correct planting depth, adequate root flare exposure, appropriate mulching, proper species and site selection, and consistent watering are equally important.

Wood decay organisms—particularly certain species of fungi—play an important role in nature by breaking down dead wood. But when they become established in a living tree, they can be an important indicator of internal decay and structural deterioration.

🍄 Signs of possible wood decay include:

* Mushrooms or fungal conks growing from the trunk, root flare, or major limbs
* Cavities, hollows, or areas of soft and deteriorating wood
* Cracks, seams, or sections of loose bark
* Dead or declining limbs in the canopy
* Fungal growth around the base of the tree
* Noticeable changes in the tree’s structure or stability

⚠️ Why does it matter?

Decay fungi can break down the components that give wood its strength. A tree may still have a green, healthy-looking canopy while significant decay is developing inside the trunk, major unions, or root system.

The location and extent of decay are especially important. Decay near the base, root flare, major structural roots, or large branch unions can increase the likelihood of whole-tree or major limb failure.
