Plants with Spooky Names for the Spooky Month of October!

Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) emerges from the ground in woodlands before the trees leaf out. Plants display their beauty in 2 stages. Stunning white blossoms appear for a very short time in early spring, emitting a wonderful fragrance that attracts many kinds of early-flying pollinators such as Mason bees and Carpenter bees. The stems of Bloodroot have a reddish sap (see last photo) that is toxic to herbivores. At the flowering stage, a light green leaf is wrapped around the stem of the flower. When the flower fades, the leaf opens in a very unique shape as large as 6" in diameter.

Fall is such a magical time of year in the prairie. The bright yellow goldenrods abuzz with a multitude of different pollinators, the asters blooming, ranging from white to blue to deep purple, and sometimes even pink, standing out amongst the golden & copper colored grasses flowing in the wind. With each passing day, it gets cooler, darker, and quieter, and soon everything will be asleep for the season again. Don’t forget to get outside and enjoy this beautiful time of year!

Like and share if you love fall and native plants!

October is Filipino American History Month! October marks the arrival of the first-ever Filipino Americans in 1587. This month celebrates the rich history, culture, and contributions of Filipino Americans. We want to recognize the important roles of these staff members at Prairie Moon, who immigrated here from the Philippines.

A little peek into the work happening behind the scenes here this fall!

Fall is a busy time of year here! We have been harvesting many different species and cleaning seed. We are also prepping fields for next year, mixing seed mixes, helping customers choose the right native plants for their spaces, shipping orders, and much, much more!

What native seeds are you sowing this fall?

Spring-blooming natives to plant this fall!

Planting in fall works with nature’s timing, allowing early-spring bloomers to emerge naturally when the weather warms. Here’s a sampling of popular natives to consider transplanting this fall:

–Wild Geranium (Geranium maculatum)
–Wild Garlic (Allium canadense)
–Bellwort (Uvularia grandiflora)
–Sharp-lobed Hepatica (Hepatica acutiloba)
–False Rue Anemone (Enemion biternatum)
–Wild Ginger (Asarum canadense)
–Common Blue Violet (Viola sororia)
& many more!

All of these are available as dormant bare roots and will ship in October. Plants arrive to you dormant, packed in peat moss, and should be planted as soon as possible. Unlike greenhouse-grown plants, bare-root plants can be planted during cold weather or anytime the soil is not frozen.

The bare-root plants we ship are at least one full growing season old, so it is not uncommon for them to bloom in their first growing season; however, depending on the species, site, and season, plants may take another season to settle into their new habitat before blooming.

Come along with our field crew as they harvest Great Blue Lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica) seeds!

Once the seeds and seed pods are brown, they are usually viable and ready to harvest! You can test if your Great Blue Lobelia seed is fully developed by rubbing them in your hand with your finger. If the seed is underdeveloped, it will be soft and easily crushed under the pressure of your finger.

To harvest, our field crew is using a sickle, also known as a seed harvesting hook (available on our website if you are interested in harvesting your own seeds!)

After the field is all harvested, it will be dried, cleaned, inventoried, and sent off to you to be grown out in your garden!

Have you harvested native seeds before?

Blue Sage (Salvia azurea) is an easy-to-grow and beautiful plant for medium to somewhat dry soils.

In a prairie planting or naturalized setting, the unusual clear blue blooms are visible from a distance despite the plants relative sparseness. The blue is a welcome sight among the many yellow prairie flowers of early fall. This bloom period of Blue Sage of late summer through early fall, attracts lots of bees and butterflies to the nectar.  If you rub or brush against the leaves, they will emit the aromatic smell typical of Salvia species, which also keeps it safe from most herbivores like deer and rabbits. The Hermit Sphinx Moth uses species in the genus Salvia as host plants.

This plant has a tendency to “lodge” or flop over, especially in rich soils, so if you are not growing it in a plant community with grasses and other clumps to lean on, avoid fertilizer, pinch or stake, and/or provide sturdy neighboring plants with more mass to support this tall plant.

Do you have Blue Sage?
