How do you create a kitchen that feels like its own room—while still feeling connected to the life of the home?

We designed a set of custom decorative glass doors that open and close at the touch of a button, instantly changing the look and feel of both spaces. Open, they allow the rooms to flow together; closed, they create intimacy while still sharing light and views.

A little departure from projects today… because this year I became a Grandma. 🤍

There’s something about the way Oliver smiles at me that melts my heart every single time. It’s such a pure kind of love. I don’t have to accomplish anything or be anything other than his Grandma. (Well… maybe with a little singing and my very best high-pitched Grandma voice. 😊)

Being able to share Shoreline Reflections with this incredibly talented group meant so much to me. As part of this week’s Design Leadership Network tour through Chicago, we visited tucked-away historic buildings, inspiring studios, and remarkable homes. It was an honor to include Shoreline Reflections and invite this discerning group to experience it as it was intended—to feel its connection to the site, the scale of the spaces, and the intimate details that quietly shape the experience of the home.

As architects and designers, we spend countless hours refining those details, knowing many may never be consciously noticed. With this group, nothing was overlooked. Their thoughtful observations, questions, and appreciation made sharing this home especially meaningful.

Finding a place for this piano was one of the design challenges that ultimately became one of my favorite moments in the home. By extending the entry beyond the glass wall of the great room, we created an intimate nook for music—a quiet space that feels both connected to and separate from the larger living areas. I love the dialogue between the piano’s sculptural form and the lake views beyond.

These two images tell another story I love about this project. The first, captured by , shows the space in its completed form. The second was taken by our contractor during a winter punch-list evening. Seeing the same space through different seasons, different light, and even different lenses is a reminder that architecture is never static—it continues to evolve with time, weather, and the lives lived within it.
