Do you love to learn new things? Are you just getting started in the home design industry? Are you mid-career and looking for a change? Do you feel you've been out of work too long and don't have any marketable skills? Would you enjoy designing homes for clients who become more like friends? Would you enjoy working in a small family-owned business where your nights and weekends are always free?
The housing industry is booming and we can hardly keep up! We’re in need of an office assistant/drafter and an experienced architectural designer. (See other job posting for more information about this position.) There's so much room for growth! We’re looking for someone who will make a long-term commitment to our team.
About Us
On the Hartford/Windsor city line, our small firm serves the residential design needs from custom home designs to additions and complete renovations. (We are not licensed architects nor interior designers. We're professional building designers. We create the construction documents used to gain a building permit and build a house.)
For over 75 years, our clients have come to us from all over Connecticut and New England. We specialize in custom home design, renovation and addition plans. We do business with hundreds of homeowners, real estate firms and development companies. Our projects range from small, simple home plans to expansive, custom, high-end home plans with fine detail and millwork.
These positions will have high client interaction on a regular basis. Qualified individuals must have strong interpersonal and communication skills, a client-centered focus, the ability to multi-task and to work with a variety of personality types.
Office assistant & drafter
We've trained many of our designers from the ground up for over 30 years. Some have come in with very little experience and, after training, have made a wonderful and fulfilling career of home design. We’re looking for someone who has a love for floor plan layouts, traffic flow through rooms, and the details that make each home style unique. This is not interior design work or decorating, but rather the design of the structure of the home, the location of walls, doors, windows, etc. In addition to light design work, candidates for this position should enjoy detailed work (drawing exterior finishes like siding and shingles, adding notes for construction, collecting data from window manufacturers and adding important details to plans, etc).
Preferred qualifications
-Comfortable with basic functions of Microsoft Word and Excel. You don’t need to know how to write formulas or do any major formatting. But you should understand the basics of entering data, formatting cells/fonts as needed, and printing select areas.
-Comfortable making professional conversation with new people over the phone and in person
-1-2 years of architectural studies is a strong plus, whether in trade school or otherwise. While you don’t need much real life experience to get started here, you should have enough experience with home design to know it’s a career worth sticking with. This field requires as much creativity as it does attention to meticulous detail.
-Will consider part-time
