We are looking to add to our quality driven team! If anyone knows of any experienced carpenters either looking for a change or to improve their situation - please have them reach out! Luckily, we’ve got the jobsite cleanup duties pretty under control for now.

This was a flawless afternoon flying an “after-the-fact” engineered steel/LVL 24-foot tall chimney frame we decided to pre-fabricate outside, layout and cut through a roof opening, drop down to a massive structural mantel framework and set into place. Having the best crane operator around - Adam @ Double R Crane Services, to help with the heavy lifting and finesse was a must. Doing lifts like this with him on the other end of the radio always makes for a fun day. Bob and Craig were on the rigging hook up and landing spot inside, Josh and Josh on the roof and radio guiding things into place, Riean catching this one on the camera, and everyone else clearing out the way and in awe of what this team does. 👌

It’s been a minute; things are evolving on the beach. Carriage house is ready for roofing and we are busy bringing the exterior finishes to life. Lots of flashing details to intermingle between cedar and asphalt roofing, cedar shingle siding, and roof trim/soffits. Fortunate to have the best coppersmiths in the industry (The Heritage Co. Coppersmiths) working with us to get all the details right. Having fun, and so thankful for the guys doing this all together.

It’s going to be a little bit of a depressing day when this fancy work gets forever covered by plaster.

Curved porch time on this incredible build in Scarborough, Maine. You’ve seen the curved house wall and conical roof in prior posts. House wall has a 17’-0” radius, porch is at 27’-0” with a 12” soffit overhang on the rafters and cantilevered deck joists.
So, we needed a 5 1/2”x 16” glulam or lvl beam to carry the roof (about 42’ in arc length). Largest straight line span between 2 posts was 14’-0” so we needed 18” lvl stock to create the 5 1/2” radius profile.
Our method was to swing the arc on the first piece, rough cut it with circular saw, then we mounted the router on the trammel with a straight cutting bit to tune that pattern up nicely. We then used that pattern to reproduce roughly 36 pieces of lvl (4 beam sections x 9 ply tall), with a flush cutting bit, or two.
From there, it was assembly with a V notch trowel and 3 gallons of liquid nail 903 applied between each ply, as well as grk screws (thanks Craig!) . We decided to build each beam section 7 plies tall, install on posts, stagger the 8th ply to mend the joints, and finish the 9th ply in line with the beams, breaking joints over the 3 posts.
I was concerned about the cantilevered portions of each section between the posts (Bernoullis principle - interesting stuff if you want to get out), so the engineer reflected on that and we decided to install straps 90” in length up each post-over the top of beam and back down the other side of post.
Now, with collar ties and rafters installed, this thing isn’t going anywhere (maybe didn’t even need the straps). Cut and installed the rafters this morning.
Monday will be time for some more curved plywood sheathing (2 layers of 3/8”).
Happy Friday everyone!

Heavy on the details. Still missing the curved porch and a few more wall swoops though.
