Well, I got a little carried away. 😅 What started as "let me write a quick post about brushing your pool" turned into a full blog, because it turns out there is a lot more to say about the unglamorous half of pool care than I expected. It covers why chlorine cannot do this job on its own, the six spots algae hides where nobody ever looks, which brush to use for your pool surface (get this one wrong on a vinyl liner and you will be sorry), and the four stages of what happens when brushing gets skipped. Skip brushing for a few weeks and your pool will let you know. 🟢 First it's a slick feeling on the steps. Then faint green shading in the corners. Then actual staining that has bonded to the surface and won't come off with a brush anymore. At that point you're not brushing, you're paying for an acid wash or a resurfacing, and those numbers get uncomfortable fast. We get calls about this all the time, and almost every time it started with a few skipped weeks. Weekly service means it never gets to step one. 📞

How to brush like you mean it:

Brushing is simple, and y'all, it's not a workout. About 10 minutes, once a week. 🧹 Work walls from the top down so debris falls toward the floor where your vacuum and filter can grab it. Hit the steps, the corners, the waterline tile, and behind anything that sits still (ladders, rails, lights). Use a nylon brush for vinyl or fiberglass and a stainless bristle brush for concrete or plaster. Then run your vacuum. Do it the day before your pool gets its chemicals and you'll get more out of both.

What a neglected filter costs you

Here's the thing about a clogged filter: it doesn't announce itself. 😬 The water just gets a little cloudy, then a little cloudier, and you start blaming your chlorine. Meanwhile, your pump is straining against all that resistance, burning extra electricity and wearing itself out early. Left long enough, you get poor circulation, algae, and a pump repair bill nobody budgeted for. A filter cleaning takes us about 20 minutes on a service visit. How to know when your filter needs help

Your filter will tell you when it's tired, but only if you're listening. 👂 Check the pressure gauge on top. Write down the reading when the filter is freshly cleaned, and once it climbs 8 to 10 psi above that number, it's time. Cartridge filters get rinsed out, sand filters get backwashed, DE filters get backwashed and recharged. Most residential pools need this every 4 to 6 weeks in season, sooner after a storm. And if you have no earthly idea what kind of filter you have, don't feel bad. Half our customers didn't either until we told them. 😊

Storm on the radar? Here's your game plan: 🌧️ BEFORE: Clear loose items from the pool deck, don't drain water (a full pool is a stable pool!), and if severe weather is coming, shut off power to pool equipment. AFTER: Skim debris right away before it sinks, empty the skimmer basket, run the pump longer than usual to filter everything out, and test your water. Rain almost always knocks chemistry out of balance. Sound like a lot to stay on top of every time the sky opens up? That's what we're here for. ✅
