What Business Owners Should Know About PEMBs
What is a PEMB — and is it actually the right building system for your project?
A Pre-Engineered Metal Building (PEMB) is much more than a metal shell.
The primary structural system is engineered for a specific project and its design criteria, while major steel components are fabricated off-site and delivered to the jobsite for er****on.
PEMBs are commonly used for:
Warehouses & Distribution Centers | Manufacturing | Aircraft Hangars | Contractor Shops | Storage | Agricultural Facilities | Commercial & Industrial Buildings
Why do owners choose PEMBs?
1. Efficient use of space
Large clear-span configurations can reduce interior columns and give owners greater flexibility for equipment, racking, vehicles and future changes in operations.
2. Construction efficiency
Because the structural system is engineered and fabricated before arriving on-site, field er****on can be highly efficient once the foundation is ready.
3. Design flexibility
A PEMB can be configured around clear height, bay spacing, roof pitch, overhead doors, loading areas, canopies, offices and other project requirements.
4. Future expansion
When expansion is considered during the original engineering process, a building can often be designed with future additions in mind.
5. Long-term durability
Properly engineered steel framing and quality roof/wall systems can provide decades of service with relatively straightforward maintenance.
But PEMBs are not automatically the best solution for every project.
Owners should also consider insulation requirements, condensation control, acoustics, architectural expectations, local building codes and future modifications.
One particularly important consideration:
Make your major design decisions before fabrication.
Changing door locations, dimensions, loading conditions or structural requirements after the steel has already been engineered and fabricated can become significantly more complicated and expensive.
The important question isn't simply:
“Is a metal building cheaper?”
The better question is:
“Which building system gives my operation the best combination of usable space, construction time, flexibility and long-term value?”
That decision should be made before ordering the building—not after the steel arrives.
At BN Buildings LLC, we believe an informed customer makes better building decisions. We'll continue sharing practical information about PEMB design, engineering, insulation, roofing systems, er****on and project planning.
