But after a good rain, small clues like exposed dirt, rock, and leaf litter pushed to the sides can show exactly where water is moving across your property.

David spotted this runoff path along the slope where water has already started carrying soil away.

Erosion doesn’t always start with a dramatic washout. Sometimes it starts with subtle signs like these.

Look closely and you’ll see exposed dirt and rock where runoff moved down the slope, along with leaf litter pushed to either side of the water’s path.

These subtle signs are easy to walk right past, but they can reveal where soil is being lost and where erosion may become a bigger problem over time.

We finally got some rain in the Texas Hill Country. Now is a good time to see what the water is doing on your land. 🌧️

In this area, David spotted a clear path where runoff moved downhill, exposing dirt and rock while pushing leaf litter to either side.

Those little clues can tell you a lot.

After a good rain, walk your property and look for exposed soil, displaced leaves, small channels, or areas where water appears to be concentrating. They can show you where soil is already moving and where erosion could become a bigger issue over time.

Ash juniper is often one of the first woody species to establish in disturbed or desolate areas of the Texas Hill Country.

It can survive in tough conditions where other vegetation struggles. Over time, accumulated organic matter beneath the tree can contribute to developing the soil conditions that give other plants an opportunity to establish and grow.

In other words, that cedar may be doing more for the landscape than you think. 🌿

This mature oak is surrounded by dense growth with broken and dead limbs still caught overhead. It’s a great example of why leaving land completely unmanaged isn’t always the same thing as leaving it healthy.

Sometimes helping the land means knowing where to intervene and where to leave it alone.

This one has broken limbs caught in the canopy, dead wood, and dense vegetation growing around and into its space.

On this property, years without active management have left this oak surrounded by dense vegetation, with storm-damaged limbs still caught in the canopy and limited space around the tree.

The goal isn’t to remove everything around it. It’s thoughtful management: selectively thinning where needed, cleaning up damaged and dead wood, and giving the oak a better opportunity to recover and thrive when conditions allow.
Especially after years of drought and severe weather in the Texas Hill Country, sometimes the best thing we can do is give these mature trees a fighting chance.
