A 2x6 exterior wall gives us more room for insulation, but that’s only part of the reason we build them this way:

• Better thermal performance
• More comfortable interior wall temperatures
• Greater structural capacity
• Less outside noise
• Deeper window and door jambs for a more substantial architectural look

It costs a little more than framing with 2x4s. We think what you get in return is worth it.

A straighter wall starts with lumber that stays straight.

We use engineered studs at key locations where a flat, stable surface matters most, which helps cabinets, tile, trim, and feature walls go in the way they’re supposed to.

It costs a little more up front. What that means is fewer compromises when the details you actually see go in.

A tiny gap around the bottom of a house can add up fast.

Sealing the sill plate helps stop uncontrolled air, moisture, dust, and pests before they ever make it inside.

It’s one of those details you may never see once the house is finished, but you’ll live with what it means every day.

Rough-in walk today at Eagle Farm.

Once framing is complete, before the trades begin, we walk the house with our client and designer to locate and clarify electrical, plumbing, lighting, cabinetry, framing, and other details while we can still work through them together in the field.

The fun part? Kara and Hannah already knew each other before this build. Hannah had done some design work for her previously.

One of those small-world connections that makes this project an especially easy fit.

Today, we had the privilege of welcoming members of our local fire department into one of our homes that’s nearing the end of framing.

As building practices continue to evolve, so do the challenges firefighters face when responding to emergencies. Walking through a home while it’s still under construction gives them a firsthand look at how modern homes are built, including how structural systems are configured, the concealed spaces in a home, and materials they’ll encounter on the job.

We’re grateful for their commitment to ongoing training and to protecting our community. If sharing what we know helps them respond more effectively and return home safely after every call, we’re honored to be a small part of that effort.

Thank you to our local firefighters for all you do.

A custom home budget conversation should not feel like a guessing game.

Too often, the plan gets developed first and the budget gets tested later. By then, the homeowner may already be attached to a version of the home that doesn't line up with the investment range.

That is a frustrating place to be, and it's usually avoidable.

A better process brings the builder, architect, and designer into the conversation early so the team can talk through priorities, finish level, under-roof square footage, site conditions, comfort, performance, and the decisions most likely to move the number.

The goal isn't to shrink the vision. The goal is to protect it.

We wrote more about this in our latest Wilson Home Journal post: www.goldenleafbuilding.com/blog/custom-home-budget-conversation-wilson-nc

These in-ceiling speakers were wired before drywall, so the homeowners can use them for everyday music or as surround sound for movie nights and ballgames (or Carolina Hurricanes Stanley Cup Final games) without extra equipment cluttering up the room.

The end result is a cleaner look, a better setup, and a house that’s ready for real life.

Now, cue the music.

When people start researching a custom home, one of the first questions is usually:

“What does it cost?”

Fair question. But the real answer depends on more than finished square footage.

Plan complexity, total square footage under roof, finish level, foundation type, structure, site conditions, and the details behind the walls all shape the final number.

That’s why two homes with similar finished square footage can be very different projects.

We broke this down in our latest blog post: **What Actually Goes Into Pricing a Custom Home?**

Most people don't build a custom home because they want to do it again in five years. They do it because they're ready to get it right.

The floor plan. The finishes. The way the house lives day to day. The stuff behind the walls that make it feel solid, comfortable, and well-built long after the new has worn off.

That's the part we care about, not just building something that photographs well when it's finished. We want to help you build something worth keeping.
