The Anatomy of a High-End Finish.True craftsmanship is measured by precision and proportions. Here’s a technical breakdown of a classic Board and Batten Wainscoting:

1x8 Base (Baseboard)
It is the widest horizontal piece at the bottom, which touches the floor.
The "1x8" refers to the measurement of the wood.
It provides a solid and visually heavy base that anchors the entire design.

1x6 Rail (Top Rail)
It is the horizontal piece that runs across the top of the entire panel, serving as the upper closure for the vertical slats.
It defines the final height of the wainscoting and serves as the upper horizontal closure.

1x4 Battens (Vertical Stiles)
These are the vertical pieces that create the "frame" or panel effect on the wall. They sit between the base and the top rail.
These are the pieces that create the visual rhythm and depth of the panels on the wall.

1x Cap with Cove (Top Cap)
It is the small finishing piece at the top of the rail. The "cove" indicates there is a small concave molding just below it for a more refined look.
The final finishing piece that sits flat on top of the rail, allowing for small pictures or decorations to be supported.
