Late summer bioswale blooms:

A summer of planting, laying leaf litter, mulching, watering, and weeding has brought us gorgeous blooms and satiated pollinators.

If you're looking for native species that bring vibrant colors in July and August, consider the following:

Partridge pea, with yellow blooms and delicate leaves
Swamp milkweed, rosy pinks that sustain monarchs
Pearly everlasting, rounded white bracts framed by silvery-sage leaves
Sneezeweed, with cheery yellow blooms
Cardinal flower, in stunning red
Butterflyweed, another monarch favorite with signature orange flowers

Huge thanks to the many people who visited DeeplyRooted Community Garden last weekend for Urban Farm Day! We loved talking with you about food forests, native plants, and urban gardening. And thanks to for sharing your impressions and weaving among the plants.

Special thanks to the group who joined for the afternoon talk, including friends made at last year's gathering. We imagined better futures together and then got into the details of what and how to grow perennial crops together with our neighbors. Following the conversation, lots of pawpaw seedlings headed to new homes 🌱

Join us on Saturday, August 15 for an Urban Farm Day discussion about how and why to grow food together. We'll gather at the DeeplyRooted Community Garden at 1:30pm to discuss which native trees and shrubs produce ample food, how we can propagate more than enough plants to share, and what we all gain by growing in community.

If the various native plant stewards and landscape designers of Washington, D.C.'s national mall share a common vision, it's that pawpaw should suffuse urban green spaces. As I wandered the mall yesterday, several patterns emerged: pawpaw served to anchor designs, they were relied on to fill in beds with their colonies, and their striking habit, clustered fruit, and enormous, tender leaves proffered unique ornamental interest.

This year has been a record year for increased insect life in our yard--fireflies and damselflies (thanks, damp spring) and caterpillars along with the usual throngs of monarchs, painted lady butterflies, and native bees.

Meet the plants blooming now and consider adding these stunning species to your yard:

-Culver's Root stands in tall architectural spires
-Joe Pye W**d is another towering beauty
-Ohio Spiderwort offers bunches of purple flowers atop its thick stalks
-Purple Coneflower is a favorite of humans and bees alike
-Pearly Everlasting's feathery clusters of white blooms are framed by iridescent greenery
-Clustered Mountain Mint offers gorgeous coloration and is a pollinator powerhouse

Here's to a pawpaw patch in every WNY neighborhood.

Buffalo is filled with pawpaw lovers and we all know why: golden mango-melon fruit, a gorgeous silhouette, and native to our region. Such a prized tree might feel out of reach since they can be hard to find and mature trees are expensive.

But let's make pawpaw ubiquitous. Thanks to an increasing number of pawpaw growers in Buffalo, affordable young trees are far more available than they were just a few years ago. So let's fill our backyards with pawpaw, our parks with pawpaw, and our community gardens with pawpaw. Let's pack them together to mimic the clonal stands they grow in (the two majestic pawpaw that anchored our backyard food forest have proliferated into 8 trees and counting). So long as pawpaw have consistent moisture and are fenced to protect them from rabbits, groundhogs, and deer, pawpaw can thrive in a wide array of conditions. Pawpaw should be one of the first understory trees we consider when we think about garden design in WNY.

Hoping that 5 or so years from now, our farmers markets are overflowing with pawpaw fruits, that we all grow out the seeds, and that pawpaw become entirely commonplace throughout the region.
