Here at Wendel our philosophy is simple: to create a better world through knowledge and leadership. What Leon Wendel began over 80 years ago as a one-man operation, providing traditional civil engineering and survey services in Western New York, has evolved into a firm of over 250 employees that has established a national presence. Today, we boast a full complement of professionals in every engineering discipline, including a robust energy efficiency department; a talented team of architects and landscape architects; construction managers, planners and interior designers. Our diverse collection of expertise allows us to solve any problem and build to the limits of your imagination. It is Wendel’s core values that set us apart from the crowd of competition. We live and breathe the four pillars of team first, quality, promises made, promises kept and first class communication. These traditions have permeated our culture and drive every proposal we submit, every project we complete and every interaction we engage in, both internal and external. Our commitment to these four tenets enables us to see our efforts through from concept to completion. This holistic approach invariably benefits our clients, who develop a real relationship with us, and come to find in Wendel a trusted adviser.

Recent updates to the Electric School Bus mandate bring more time, but planning is still key.

What Changed?
• New bus purchases must be electric by 2032 (previously 2027)
• Full fleet electrification now required by 2040 (previously 2032)

What to keep in mind?
• Most districts need 3–4 years from planning to deployment
• Early planning helps align infrastructure, utilities, and procurement
• NYSERDA funding is available for Fleet Electrification Plans (first-come, first-served)
• Districts with completed plans are often prioritized for incentives

We would be glad to connect and support your district in navigating the process, evaluating options, and building a plan that fits. Learn more about our Alternative Fuels solutions below.

We provide turnkey design services, financial analysis, grant assistance, and feasibility studies for converting your fleet to zero-emission vehicles.

Progress continues at 631 Northland in Buffalo, NY! A massive non-historic 1980s blast furnace was removed, revealing a full-length flatbed train car that once allowed large pieces of manufactured steel to slide in and out of the furnace. The building, once owned and operated by Niagara Machine & Tool, will be brought back to life to complement the adjacent Northland Workforce Training Center.

The Buffalo Sewer Authority (BSA) is taking a proactive step toward a more resilient future by installing two 4,400-pound sluice gates at the mouth of historic Cornelius Creek in Black Rock Canal Park. The gates will automatically open and close in real time based on Niagara River water levels and wind conditions, helping prevent river backflow into the sewer system during storm surges and seiches.

This smart infrastructure investment will help reduce combined sewer overflows, protect homes and businesses from sewer backups, and lessen the burden on the wastewater treatment system during extreme weather. As extreme weather events become more frequent, projects like this strengthen Buffalo's resilience, improve system reliability, and help safeguard the community for years to come.
