🥇 National Award — Historic Renovation
We took home top national honors for transforming a historic service barn into a refined family wellness retreat and spa. Original architectural elements were retained and restored where possible, allowing the barn’s heritage character to inform the design while complementing contemporary interventions that accommodate modern living.

🥈 Regional Award — Residential Exterior Renovation
The project’s primary purpose was to greatly improve the structural components of a home in the Southern Berkshires and expand the outdoor living area. We worked with our trade partners to create a seamless design that enhanced indoor-outdoor transitions, while maintaining aesthetic continuity and client comfort, creating a seamless link to the beautiful forested landscape.

This week’s featured partner is BrightBuilt Home which produces energy-efficient prefab, modular homes and ADUs. JMC collaborated with on a home in the Berkshires which we completed in 2024. The last four images showcase the house we worked on together.

After years of navigating an industry that often felt complicated and opaque, the founders of BrightBuilt Home envisioned a simpler path – one where everyday people didn't need to be sustainability experts, or have deep industry connections to move into a beautifully designed, net-zero home. Exciting news! JMC is working on our new headquarters space in the Berkshires. We have partnered with Burr and McCallum Architects to transform a 1954 mid-century commercial retail building into a beautiful, functional home for our entire team.

What to Expect:
• All Under One Roof: Combining our offices, meeting spaces and storage into one collaborative hub.
• Industrial Design: A utilitarian, clean-line layout inspired by a classic 1950s machine shop.
• Green Spaces: Swapping out old asphalt for native plants and trees to beautify our community intersection. 🌿

We cannot wait to welcome employees and clients to this bright, pleasant new workspace! Stay tuned for more updates as construction progresses toward our move-in date.

The JMC crew has continued to make steady progress on site throughout the demolition phase at this secluded 10-acre Berkshire property, formerly a 1930s Girl Scout lodge that was converted into a residence in the 1990s. To support the architect's design development, exploratory demolition and rot remediation have been completed – existing windows and doors have been removed, along with interior and exterior finishes, electrical systems, plumbing fixtures and fittings, and HVAC equipment.

The plans to preserve the structure while integrating modern, sustainable building science are incredibly exciting. Upgrading the building envelope will set a solid foundation for long-term efficiency. We are thrilled to work with Keira Ritter Design and a collection of talented and long-term trade partners on this project.

With demolition and remediation activities substantially complete on this comprehensive, high-performance retrofit, the project is well positioned to transition from the investigation and preparation phase into full construction once the remaining preconstruction design activities have been completed. This farmhouse renovation overcame unexpected structural and moisture challenges in the great room which required a complete redesign – the JMC team utilized strategic phased scheduling and inspections to maintain momentum while waiting for architectural drawings. A hidden moisture issue was discovered in the floor system – we had to fully resolve this underlying problem before any further structural or cosmetic work could proceed. The space was ultimately transformed with vaulted ceilings and custom cherry-wrapped trusses. The addition of visible steel turnbuckles provides a dramatic and rustic-meets-industrial aesthetic.

Further modernizing the space, we raised the south-facing kitchen walls to accommodate 8-foot tall, 16-foot wide sliding glass doors, seamlessly connecting the interior to the exterior. And, did we mention? ... The views are breathtaking!
