Yesterday, we celebrated the life of Bill Burke, surrounded by his loving family, friends, German Shepherds, goats, chickens, and rabbits.

Together, we reminisced about the great memories we shared and the many projects Bill led during his time with Derman Associates. His impact on our team and the people around him will not be forgotten.

The most beautiful finishing work starts with what you’ll never see.

Behind the countertops and underneath the floors are countless details, careful prep, and craftsmanship that make the finished space possible.

For a commercial warehouse, drainage isn’t something you want to think about after the concrete is poured. A properly installed trench drain helps move water quickly, keeps high-traffic areas clear, and protects the building from drainage issues down the road.

It’s one of those details that disappears into the finished space but getting it right now makes all the difference later.

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our supervisor and friend, Bill Burke.

Bill carried a lifetime of plumbing and HVAC knowledge and a heart of gold, and he gave both away freely. He trained our apprentices, our young employees, and even our most seasoned plumbers. Every one of us knew that whatever the question, Bill would have an answer, or a story, or a joke that made the whole crew laugh.

His family came first, always. He loved animals, especially his German Shepherds, who listened to him the way the rest of us did. And not long ago, he brought home goats - a fact he shared with the kind of delight that made you want goats too. That was Bill: still making room for something new, still finding joy in everything.

There is a hole here now in the shape of a good man, and we will forever feel it.

This trench will be gone soon and filled with stone and buried under a concrete floor.

That’s how a building gets built. Before there’s a floor, before there are walls you’d recognize, before there’s a single toilet or sink, the drain lines go in the ground first.

Everything you see in this photo becomes permanently inaccessible the moment the slab is
poured. Which is exactly why this stage gets tested and inspected before anyone pours anything.

Get it wrong here and fixing it means sawing and jackhammering through a finished floor.

Check out this clean pe*******on work through the mezzanine deck. Every pe*******on coordinated with structural before the first hole was cut, so nothing conflicts with the joists and nothing gets reopened down the line. This is the kind of detail that doesn’t show up in the finished space but it’s exactly what makes an inspection go smoothly.
