A Smarter Patio Layout and Drainage Solution 💧

Sometimes the best design is about making the space work better. This patio originally included a turf inlay, but the layout was modified by removing the border course and stitching matching travertine pavers back in to create one continuous patio surface.

Because the existing grade couldn’t be changed, we also installed a 2.5 inch drain beneath a half inch gap between the pavers. This allows water from the house and patio to collect and flow into the main drainage system.

It’s a clean, functional solution that stays hidden while remaining easy to maintain. If the drain ever becomes clogged, it can simply be vacuumed out.

Stop Pressure Washing Your Concrete Pavers! ⚠️

That pressure washer might look harmless, but even a small battery powered unit at 500 to 800 PSI can permanently damage concrete pavers.

Pressure washing can etch the surface and blast away the cream, leaving the pavers rough, discolored, and beyond repair. In this courtyard, the damage was so severe that the pavers now need to be completely replaced.

Proper paver cleaning requires the right technique and products. Muriatic acid can be used, but it must be handled correctly because improper acid cleaning can be extremely dangerous and can make the pavers look even worse.

Pressure washing isn’t always off limits, but you need the right equipment, pressure, and tip for the job.

These courtyard pavers were damaged by improper pressure washing, leaving the existing surface in need of replacement.

We’re replacing the ruined sections with three piece silver travertine, carefully selected to match the three piece silver travertine already installed in the backyard.

Matching the material throughout the property helps create a consistent, seamless look between the courtyard and backyard.

Saving a Tree That Was Set Up to Fail 🌳

A severely leaning tree at one of our new maintenance properties needs more than just a quick fix.

The tree was planted 10–12 inches too deep, burying the crown of the root ball and restricting proper root development and airflow. It was also improperly supported with speaker wire that couldn’t withstand the wind.

With roughly 90% of its growth concentrated on one side, the tree has become heavily unbalanced and continues to lean.

Our plan is to carefully reduce the crown, thin the interior, and remove select major branches to help redistribute the tree’s weight and encourage healthier, more balanced growth.

Think Twice Before Using Natural Stone for an Outdoor Backsplash 🔥

Natural stone can look beautiful in an outdoor kitchen, but it may not be the best choice behind a grill. Smoke, oil, and black soot can build up on the stone and leave stains that are extremely difficult to remove.

With materials like silver travertine, aggressive cleaning methods such as brushing or power washing can damage the stone and its finish.

For outdoor kitchen backsplashes and countertops, we recommend materials like granite or porcelain because they are easier to maintain and more resistant to staining and fading.

For porcelain, we’re talking about a 3/4 inch thick, 24 x 24 inch porcelain paver, not standard indoor tile. The edges can also be bullnosed to create a smoother, cleaner finish.

Marcelino’s favorite part of the job is blowing and cleaning up yards—he loves seeing a property looking clean and finished after a job well done. And that doesn’t stop when he clocks out! In his free time, he enjoys keeping his own yard looking its best.

After 25 years with the company, one of the biggest things Marcelino has learned is just how important family is. He considers the guys he works alongside more than just coworkers and truly appreciates the relationships he’s built with the team over the years.

This Is How NOT to Install Drainage in Travertine 🚫

Drainage is easy to overlook, but the wrong material and installation can create problems over time.

In this example, plastic drainage was installed alongside travertine and, after just two years, the Arizona sun caused the material to warp and shrink. The result is uneven drainage that moves up and down instead of maintaining a clean, consistent finish.

The right drainage system should be designed around the hardscape material and installed to withstand the conditions here in Arizona.

Sharp Pool Edges? There’s a Better Finish. 🏊‍♂️

A pool edge may look finished, but a straight travertine edge without a bullnose can leave sharp top and bottom corners that are uncomfortable when swimmers grab onto the edge.

A 3/8 inch bullnose finish can round those edges, creating a smoother, safer, and more comfortable transition.

This technique works well with natural stone like travertine and porcelain, but it is not recommended for concrete pavers, which can end up with an unnatural appearance.

🔥 A Custom Outdoor Kitchen Built for the Details

This nearly finished outdoor kitchen was designed to be both beautiful and functional, with every detail considered.

The project features bull nosed porcelain countertops, a natural stone base, and dedicated spaces for a griddle, future pizza oven, and Recteq Flagship 1600 smoker.

One of the standout features is the custom smoker integration. Instead of leaving the smoker sitting on the counter, it will have its own custom inlay with a built in grease trap for cleaner and easier maintenance.

The six foot walls and three foot backsplash also serve a purpose beyond privacy. They allow the downlights to illuminate the countertop without casting shadows over the workspace. The LED lighting is dimmable, color changing, and individually controlled.

Even the electrical system was designed with the future in mind. All lighting is installed through conduit, making future service and replacement much easier.
