Building next to an active runway comes with one rule you don't break: nothing on the ground that could end up in a jet engine. Not a screw, not a scrap of drywall, not a coffee lid.
Our team lived by that rule (and plenty of others) for more than a year at Salina Regional Airport, and on Oct. 8 the airport cut the ribbon on its terminal expansion.
The project added a new TSA screening area, a bigger holdroom, baggage and flex space, and a brand-new baggage claim. The catch? The airport never closed. The owner asked us to treat passengers, pilots, and SkyWest like owners, too, so we kept crews and travelers separated by hard barriers, scheduled that barrier work for when the terminal was empty, and built a new exit route before the old one ever came out. Flights kept running the whole time.
To everyone on our team who had a hand in this one, from the project managers and superintendents to the field crews who self-performed the framing, drywall, sheathing, and blocking: thank you.
