2026 marks five years in business for Butler Co.
The first picture is how I started this company; all the tools I could cobble together in the bed of my truck, hu***ng it from one job to the next. Replacing sliding doors, windows, siding, laying tile--anything to justify calling Butler Co a construction company.
The second picture is one of our custom homes from this year. In 2026 alone, we are responsible for 24 active building permits. Butler Co is not the same company it once was, and this is not a victory lap. Rather, it is a testament to delusional confidence and a never-quit attitude.
Being an entrepreneur means weathering storms, humbling yourself, and above all else, never quitting. In honor of this mark, here are five lessons I have learned along the way:
1. Hold yourself accountable. It is both the easiest and hardest concept, because you have total control over accountability. Owning a business means there is no one to hide behind when you screw up, and you absolutely will make mistakes. Stand and deliver.
2. Service before self. Borrowing this ethos from my time in the military, but being an entrepreneur means putting the needs of your employees and even subcontractors before your own. People are not tools to help you extract wealth. It is in your best interest to ensure that they earn from your efforts. In my experience, this means making sure everyone gets paid before I do. That selflessness is paid back in loyalty that propels the company in a positive way.
3. Never go nuclear. I can often fail at this, but it is almost always true that losing control of my temper leads to counterproductive results. Construction is one of the last industries where men can be men, and egos are bound to clash. Maintaining control of your emotions is a signal of maturity and steadfast leadership.
4. Set expectations. It is your responsibility to establish the expectations of quality, punctuality, attention to detail, and behavior. Job titles and tasks are simply not enough. Tell people what you want and how you want it. Their failure or success depends on it.
5. Never quit.
Thank you to everyone who helped us get to this point. Here's to 5 more years.
