Hey y’all

Here is the vases and sizes that I use. I get them from dollar tree, along with the glass pebbles or natural rocks. You can also by case quantities and have them shipped to the store to pick up.
It doesn’t have to be this type exactly, you can get different kinds as long as they are tall enough with a large enough opening for air flow.

Let’s talk about aerial roots, a.k.a air roots and their purpose.

Aerial roots are what you see on epiphyte orchids. Epiphytes grow attached to the sides of trees. This is why when they are pots of medium all the air roots are reaching out above the soil into the air and the ones below are dead or on their way to die. The instinct to be out in the open cannot be escaped even in your home.

Even though they attach themselves to trees, orchids are not parasitic like other plants.

The air roots absorbs nutrients and water from the air. They thrive on carbon dioxide. Which we release when we exhale, ever heard the saying “talk to your plants” this is why. I sing to mine, but we’re not gonna talk about that. 😂

Sometimes you will see a white spongey looking stuff this is called velamen, this helps the roots take up water. Also the roots can be super green or have a silvery gray look.

Dehydrated air roots will look shriveled.

Dead air roots are papery and brownish in color, they will look very very different than healthy ones.

Wanted to know about repotting dendrobiums and bad roots.

Dendrobiums are just about all epiphytes (side of trees) there are a few that are lithophytes (rocks). So in that case we don’t repotting we put in proper water. We just use the no root method due to the structure of the rocks. Which is a lot of rocks and water level at almost the top of them but not over and then set the orchid on top. You will need a tall vase to help support the long stalks and the structure of the roots.

Roots are very different from phalaenopsis, dendrobium roots are very small in diameter as well as the structure. Bad roots will be papery and dry or mushy to the touch or if the casing of the root came off and you see what looks like a string. They can be white to green in color, but as long as they are firm they are ok.
