Throwback Thursday takes us back to this project in Old Forge, where we replaced an older oil boiler and domestic hot water storage system with a modern, high-efficiency heat pump water heater.

This type of upgrade is a great example of replacing an outdated, high-energy system with a more efficient solution that helps lower operating costs and improve overall performance over time.

The new 80-gallon AO Smith heat pump water heater is estimated at around $193 per year in operating cost based on the Energy Guide rating. During installation, electrical connections were completed, PEX lines were secured, and copper supply lines were prepared for integration into the system.

The result is a more efficient hot water setup designed to reduce energy usage, lower utility costs, and deliver reliable performance for years to come.

This water heater upgrade is a great example of how energy-efficient equipment can make a noticeable difference over time.

The existing gas water heater was estimated to cost around $205 per year to operate based on the Energy Guide rating. The new upgraded unit is estimated at only $117 per year, significantly reducing annual energy usage.

Over an estimated 15-year lifespan, that adds up to roughly $1,000 in energy savings while also improving overall efficiency and performance. Small upgrades like this can help homeowners reduce long-term utility costs while investing in more modern, energy-efficient systems for the home.

Hot upstairs rooms, uneven temperatures, and rising energy bills are common signs that a home may not have the proper insulation and air sealing needed for summer comfort. When heat enters through the attic and conditioned air escapes, HVAC systems work harder while comfort levels drop throughout the home.

The right insulation upgrade helps reduce heat transfer, improve temperature control, and keep conditioned air where it belongs. Combined with proper air sealing, it creates a more energy-efficient and balanced indoor environment.

The result is a cooler, more comfortable home, reduced strain on cooling systems, and lower energy costs during the hottest months of the year. Better comfort upstairs, more consistent temperatures, and improved home performance, just in time for summer.

Your home’s insulation plays a major role in keeping indoor temperatures stable, especially during hot summer months. When it starts to underperform, you’ll notice comfort issues and rising energy costs throughout the entire home. Here are key warning signs to watch for:

1. Hot upstairs or second-floor rooms - Warm air naturally rises, but poor attic insulation allows excessive heat transfer, making upper rooms uncomfortable even with AC running.

2. Air conditioning running nonstop - If your system rarely shuts off, it often means cooled air is escaping through the attic or poorly sealed areas.

3. Uneven cooling between rooms - Some rooms feel significantly warmer than others due to inconsistent insulation coverage or air leakage pathways.

4. High summer electricity bills - Increased cooling costs often point to energy loss through the attic, walls, or poorly insulated spaces.

5. Hot ceilings or walls to the touch - This indicates heat is transferring directly through insufficient insulation levels or missing air barriers.

6. Humidity or sticky indoor air - Poor insulation combined with air leaks can allow outdoor humidity to enter, making the home feel uncomfortable even when cooled.

7. Weak airflow from vents despite AC running - Air loss in the attic or duct leakage can reduce system efficiency and overall cooling performance.

Proper summer insulation performance relies on a combination of air sealing and thermal resistance. Air sealing prevents hot outdoor air from entering, while insulation slows heat transfer into living spaces.

When both are correctly installed, homeowners experience cooler indoor temperatures, reduced energy usage, and a more comfortable home throughout the summer season.

High energy bills are often caused by hidden problems in different parts of the home. Some homeowners struggle with heat loss from poorly insulated attics, others deal with moisture and airflow issues in crawlspaces, while outdated water heaters can quietly waste energy every day.

These upgrades helped our clients improve overall home efficiency through attic insulation, crawlspace encapsulation, and heat pump water heater installations. Each solution was designed to target a specific problem, reducing energy loss, controlling moisture, and improving system performance.

The result is lower monthly utility costs, better indoor comfort, improved energy efficiency, and homes that perform better year-round.

Many homes unknowingly struggle with excess humidity building up inside the attic. Warm indoor air rises, carrying moisture from daily activities like cooking, showering, and breathing. When this warm air reaches a cooler attic space, it condenses over time, creating the perfect environment for mold growth.

Mold is not only a structural concern, it can also affect indoor air quality and contribute to respiratory irritation, allergies, and discomfort, especially for sensitive individuals.
The solution starts with proper insulation and air sealing. Insulation helps stabilize attic temperatures, reducing cold surfaces where condensation forms. Air sealing prevents warm, humid air from entering the attic in the first place.

When both are done correctly, the result is a drier attic, reduced mold risk, improved energy efficiency, and healthier indoor air for your home.

This attic in Whitesboro was losing energy due to outdated fiberglass insulation, major air leaks, and poor ventilation, common issues that lead to drafts, uneven indoor temperatures, and higher heating and cooling costs throughout the year.

To improve performance, we removed the existing insulation and fully air sealed key problem areas around light fixtures, plumbing penetrations, and the chimney. Ventilation was upgraded with proper airflow and soffit intake improvements, while insulation dams were installed along the catwalk for protection and structure. The catwalk was rebuilt using 4" rigid foam board topped with OSB for durable attic access and storage, with dense-packed cellulose installed beneath for complete thermal coverage. We also removed the old whole-home vent fan, attic hatch, and attic fan, then repaired and refinished the affected drywall areas.

The attic was finished with 14" of blown-in cellulose insulation to achieve an R49 insulation value for long-term energy efficiency and comfort. Using materials such as cellulose insulation, rigid foam board, OSB, ventilation components, spray foam, and sealants, the result is a tightly sealed, properly ventilated attic built for improved home performance and year-round comfort.

Your home may be quietly losing energy every single day without you noticing. Hidden air leaks, underperforming insulation, outdated electrical systems, and inefficient heating or water systems all work together to reduce comfort and increase monthly costs. Over time, this leads to uneven temperatures, constant system strain, and higher utility bills.

Instead of treating each issue separately, a complete home performance approach upgrades the entire system as one. This includes air sealing to lock in conditioned air, upgrading attic, basement, and crawl space insulation for full thermal control, modernizing electrical systems for safety and efficiency, and installing heat pumps and high-efficiency water heaters for better energy use.

The result is a home that works smarter, not harder. More stable indoor temperatures, reduced energy waste, improved system performance, and long-term comfort throughout every season. On top of that, homeowners may qualify for up to $12,000 in free upgrades, making the EmPower+ Program a powerful opportunity to improve the home while saving on costs.

Send us a message and we’ll help you check if you qualify. It only takes a minute.
