🏠 DOES YOUR HOMEOWNERS POLICY INCLUDE BUILDING CODE COVERAGE? 🤔
Our team recently had the opportunity to meet with representatives from Allstate, and one important topic that came up is something we think every homeowner should be aware of: Building Codes Protection
When your home is damaged and repairs are needed, the work has to meet current building codes — not necessarily the codes that were in place when your home was originally built.
That can mean additional requirements and additional costs.
Many homeowners assume those code-required upgrades are automatically covered by their insurance policy, but that isn’t always the case. Depending on your policy, Building Codes Protection may be an optional coverage.
Allstate shared that this coverage can help pay the increased costs associated with bringing covered repairs up to current local building codes after a covered loss. While premiums vary by policy, they indicated the average additional cost is typically around $100–$200 per year.
And this isn't just something owners of older homes should think about. Building codes and requirements continue to change, so even relatively newer homes can be affected.
👉 Our advice: Call your insurance agent and ask:
“Does my policy include Building Codes Protection or Ordinance & Law coverage, and what is my coverage limit?”
A quick conversation now could potentially save you from a significant out-of-pocket expense later.
