This project was completed at Whitefish Mountain Resort on a metal roof home with gutters installed by NSL Seamless Gutters.

One section shows the upper gutter discharging onto a lower roof. The heat cable continues down through the downspout and into the lower gutter to maintain a clear melt path when snow begins to melt.

Heat cable systems can absolutely be installed on metal roofs. However, snow retention systems are highly recommended — and often required — to help prevent sliding snow from damaging the cables.

Designed for long-term performance in mountain environments.

Same property. Different results.

At this building near Big Mountain in Whitefish, gutters (installed by NSL Seamless Gutters) and heat cable were added to one side only.

The unprotected side shows significant icicle buildup and runoff. The protected side remains controlled — no large icicles and no splatter against the structure.

When gutters and heat cable work together, the difference is visible.

Heat cable should extend out the bottom of the downspout.

If it ends inside, water can refreeze at the outlet and cause the system to back up. We run it through to maintain a clear melt path.

Details matter.

Icicles this size usually mean there’s ice buildup behind the scenes.

When gutters freeze and ice dams form, water can back up under roofing materials and cause interior damage. Heavy icicles can also become a safety concern.

A properly installed heat cable system helps maintain melt paths and reduce excessive ice buildup like this.

Winter in Montana is predictable. Damage doesn’t have to be.

Shown here is a heat cable T-connection, which allows us to split one system into two directions.

These are sometimes required due to maximum cable length limits or complex roof designs — especially in mountain environments like Whitefish. We only install them when absolutely necessary. Fewer connections mean fewer potential points of failure.

You’ll also notice we secured this connection up out of the gutter so it isn’t constantly submerged during rain or snowmelt.

Installed with long-term reliability in mind.

Heat cable doesn’t work right if it doesn’t reach far enough up the roof.

The cable needs to extend past the wall line.
Because if it doesn’t, the ice dam can build ABOVE the heat cable, and now the cable is basically sitting below the problem while water backs up behind the dam.

This zig-zag layout is placed intentionally so the melt path stays open where ice dams actually start.

Heat cable systems don’t usually fail all at once.
They fail because of small details that get overlooked.

Sharp metal edges can slowly cut into a cable and once the cable is damaged, the whole system stops working.
We add protection anywhere there’s potential contact so the cable stays intact and the system does what it’s supposed to do.

This is the kind of detail you never see but always want done right.

Can you find the heat cable in these photos?
This project had separate rooflines, but we were able to connect the upper and lower gutters into one clean, continuous heat cable system—routed to stay as hidden as possible.

Also worth noting: the telephone wires visible in these photos are not part of our installation.
Clean, thoughtful installs make a difference.

When installing heat cable systems, details matter.
Any time a roof pe*******on is required, it’s properly sealed to help prevent leaks and protect the roof system long-term.

It’s not just about melting ice—it’s about installing it the right way.

Heavy snowfall is when heat cable systems really prove their value.

Heat cable is most effective when it’s turned on before the snow starts piling up. Melting snow as it falls is far easier than trying to melt a large ice dam after it’s already formed.

Turning heat cables on early helps prevent ice buildup, water damage, and costly repairs later.
