Grown by Nature + for Nature- from the soil life, insects critters birds and my family.

I have taken a deep dive into the beginnings of synthetic chemical fertilizers and there's so much money, manipulation and marketing that has gone into selling home gardeners, and farmers alike into the idea that we need something other than what nature provides to take care of nature.

Spoiler- it doesn't, and when we mess with mother, nature's already perfectly calibrated solutions, we see implications trickling down through generations.

But I feel such a shift in the public's desire to take care of nature to eat better for the planet and our own health... which I think is also why the current American administration is holding on so tight because they know their way of thinking is dead on arrival.

Can you feel the change too? 💚🌿💚

I wonder if my always capitalizing the N in Nature came from Wedell Berry along with my deep love of this Land, and my relationship to it, the food we eat and the people who make it all possible...

I had just paused chapter 5 of his "The Unsettling of America" as read by the wonderful Nick Offerman, when I read the news of his passing... that is sticking with me. How entangled we all are with each other and how very much part of nature we are.

Grieving in waves, digging into the soil, watching bees.

August: End of a summer chaos edition.

We celebrated 22 years married on Saturday by watching both our kids play different sports in different cities, followed by a fabulous meal at Churchill St. Restaurant

The boys go back to school tomorrow and we've been soaking up the last rays of summer sun.

Time is so precious and the garden is such a good indicator of how fast it goes.

Sitting in the back garden tonight, feeling the sun go down ( along with watching it) smelling phlox wafting on the cooling breeze was such a good way to say farewell to August.

September, i am ready for you in all your duality of hanging onto summer harvests while welcoming in fall weather.

From potatoes, melons, zucchini, and so many memories, hope your harvests continue strong💚

Keeping Chickens is not for the faint of heart!

But when you love them, you will do anything for them. Even remove impacted bumblefoot 'kernels'... 🫣

I may owe my boys something big for helping hold her as I operated.

She had developed 2 in each foot, and i will say it took me a minute to mentally prepare for this. But you know what,it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I kind of got in the zone doing it... but really hope none of the other girls get these for a good long while. 🫠

We soaked her feet in warm Epsom salt water for about 20 minutes to soften and it really helped.

I love the way doing all the crazy things I do like keep chickens, grow and preserve food stretch me waaaaay out of my comfort zone (and my kids).

Gosh, I love this modern Homesteading life, even if Rocky's still mad at me.

Also, I would love to hear anybody else who has dealt with chicken issues and felt like a pioneer woman afterwards 😉

Corn season is here, and we make the most of it by preserving it in all the ways we can!

We blanch and freeze some, but the bulk we pressure can, and there's nothing better than having those jars in the pantry.

We buy from a local farmer we've known for years.
So we know it's local and grown w/o pesticides.

We've gotten it down to a science, but I don't know what I'll do once my kids are not there to shruck All those cubs of corn...

The Garden AND CHICKENS keeping me humble...

I wanted to talk about this.Cool new thing i'm trying where I'm planting my fall brassicas with if cover crop of oats.

But Stevie Chicks ( a speckled sussex) decided to destroy most of the oat cover crop this afternoon.

So, for now all I'll say is, even in minnesota, there is still time to plant for fall harvests, radishes, greens, Cilantro and arugula... and root crops like early heets and turnips, especially if you cover them. I've got lots of details in an article that I will link to in my stories.

Also* no chickens were harmed in the making of this video 😆

Anyone else have stories of their chickens, destroying their gardens because right now, I think misery does love company 🤪
