We put Mike in front of a camera and asked him the questions people actually want to ask a plumber. Worst thing he has pulled out of a line. How it got in there. What should never go down a drain in the first place.

His answer to that last one is the one worth listening to. Wipes, grease and anything labeled flushable are behind a large share of the calls we run, and every one of them started as a small decision at a sink or a toilet.

Thirty years of this and the list has not changed much.

The ones who answer the phone. The ones who are up at 3:00 am when a basement is filling. The ones who leave a holiday weekend to go fix somebody's water heater.

Labor Day is a day about work, and the work here has always been done by them.

Most people have no idea how old their water heater is. The average tank lasts 8 to 12 years, and the sticker on the side will tell you exactly where yours falls. The serial number encodes the year it was built.

If yours is past ten, it is not an emergency. It is a heads up. Tanks rarely fail politely, and replacing one on your schedule costs a lot less than replacing one at 6 AM with water across the basement floor.

Four things worth checking:
Flush the tank once a year
Inspect the anode rod
Watch for rust at the fittings
Listen for popping or rumbling
