Helping out some friends, and colleagues from . With a little research you can find the “Dragon House”. It’s located in Jamaica Plain. Built in the 1890’s. Last year it suffered some pretty serious fire damage. Boston Fire got there quick, but the damage was done. These old houses can go up in flames quick. They were able to contain the fire to 1/3rd of the house. But the water from the fire hose’s ruined whatever finishes the fire didn’t. Honestly, it was probably the best thing that happened to the house. The original framing was tired, and messy in some spots. It was a challenge to recreate some of its original charm, and uniqueness. Very unique house, probably the most unique house i’ve worked on in 25 years. Now it’s stronger then ever, and will@soon be ready for another 130 years of use. The siding looks like dragon scales! Although if you were a dragon, you would need to be a pretty small one to live inside.

Finally getting around to post about this. Over the past 24 years, we have done a ton of different projects, all different scopes, and sizes. Some projects regardless of scope, and money, stand out. For us, it’s the projects where the work is more than just a new bathroom, it’s regaining freedom. This project was for a neighbor, and now friend who was recently diagnosed with ALS. The disease impacted a guy who is always on the go, always riding his bike, or fixing something around his house. I see some of myself in him. Then to see the disease start to take that away is heartbreaking. With help from some colleagues, and friends. We were so happy to be able to give him some freedom back. From a new bathroom, a new custom ramp, widening doors, leveling cabinets, to creating more living space. A bunch of little things, to create some freedom, and remove some frustrations. Money is nice, we all need it. But it’s nothing in comparison to helping a person who really needs it. To see a smile, and to see him living his best life with the cards he was been dealt. This work pays your soul. It’s the best kind of payment.

Things are moving along at 1002 beacon st. Despite the seemingly unyielding heat. Technically this isn’t siding. Siding is used as part of the exterior assembly that blocks moisture from getting into the exterior walls of a building. I’ll get fancy and call this a cedar facade. Almost more like a vertical deck. Set up to allow the wood to move with the changing weather, and allow airflow. Wood moves a lot with changing temperature, and moisture content of the air. Cedar has unique properties that make it resistant, to rot, and insects. Those same properties also help it to corrode most fasteners. So be sure to use stainless steel fasteners if working with cedar.
