We ran into a few surprises on this one.

Once the old deck came off, we found rot behind it where it had been attached to the house. We fixed that first, because a new deck is only as solid as what it’s attached to.

Then came the rebuild: new low-maintenance decking, black railings, and a staircase down to the pool. There’s also a covered patio underneath now, so the family has shade too.
