Your sewer line might be the most overlooked part of your home. That old cast iron pipe started at a full 4 inches, but after 70 to 80 years of use in a typical Westfield home, buildup can shrink it down to a fraction of that.

On this project, before we closed up the floor, we tied our new PVC into the old sewer line. First step was a camera inspection to see what we were dealing with, and it showed grease buildup narrowing the pipe. From there, a jet cleaning got it back close to that original 4 inch flow without damaging the pipe.

Skip this step and you’re hooking new fixtures up to a pipe that can’t keep up, and that’s how backups happen.
