Rob may have forgotten what he was supposed to say… but luckily, we didn’t.

What he was trying to explain is Utah’s insurance “matching” rule: when a covered repair or replacement doesn’t match the existing materials in color, texture, or size, the insurer may need to repair or replace enough of the affected area to create a reasonably uniform appearance. In plain English: your home shouldn’t look like it was repaired with a clearance-bin patch kit.

For accuracy: Utah Admin. Code R590-190-13 applies when a policy settles first-party losses on a replacement-cost basis, and it specifically includes both interior and exterior losses where repaired or replaced items do not match in color, texture, or size. That can include storm-damaged roofs under some policies, as long as the storm damage is a covered loss and the policy has the applicable replacement-cost coverage. Utah’s Insurance Department notes that wind, wind-driven rain, falling objects, and collapse from ice or snow are covered under most standard homeowners policies, but coverage always depends on the specific policy.
