October is National Fire Prevention Month!

Whether at home or the workplace, taking simple steps to reduce fire risks and prepare for emergencies can save lives.

To help keep our teams and communities safe, we asked Dave Wacker, one of our Safety Managers who served over 50 years as a firefighter, to share a quick guide on how to properly inspect a fire extinguisher.

When performing your fire extinguisher inspection, remember to check these three key areas:
✅ Ensure the pressure gauge needle is in the green zone so you know its fully charged and ready to use
✅ Make sure the pin is held in place by a standard plastic tamper seal (with no extra wiring or zip ties) so it can be pulled easily in an emergency
✅ Confirm the nozzle is tight, clear of debris, and free of cracks

Performing monthly fire extinguisher inspections to make sure they are fully functional and ready for use is one of the easiest ways to stay prepared in the event of a fire. While you're checking your extinguishers, don't forget to test your smoke detectors and replace any old batteries as well. Take a few minutes to check yours today!

At ASMG, we believe in supporting the communities where we live and work. For Mike Carroll, Limerick, Maine is not just his workplace, but a hometown where his family's roots run deep.

When the local Touch-A-Truck event was at risk of coming to an end, Mike stepped in and brought the event to our facility in town. Since 2024, we have been hosting this event to bring the community together and continue the tradition.

This year, we plan to have the biggest spread of equipment yet and are hoping to have even more families from the community come by. Join us on October 17th at the Carroll Materials Limerick, ME facility. For more information regarding the event, comment below!

Today we hosted a Women of Asphalt Northeast tour at our Deerfield, MA facility!

Attendees got a behind the scenes look at our aggregate quarry, hot mix asphalt plants, liquid asphalt terminal, and on-site testing laboratories. Beyond showcasing our operations, we were especially proud to share the career stories of a few of the women here at ASMG.

Supporting our employees and building up our local communities is at the core of who we are. When an employee brings forward a meaningful charitable cause, ASMG strives to support them where we can make a positive impact.

Meet Maegen Staples who introduced the Hot Chocolate Run for Safe Passage to us last year. After learning about the event through her daughter, Maegen inspired over 50 of our employees and family members to join together in support. This annual race is a Northampton, MA tradition benefiting Safe Passage, an organization dedicated to creating a world free of domestic violence and relationship abuse.

October is Careers in Construction Month, and following last year's response, we have decided to bring back our Careers series!

Today is Hunger Action Day, and we are excited to highlight a few of the many organizations in the Northeast that take action against food insecurity every day.

ASMG is proud to stand alongside five regional food bank partners across Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Through hands-on volunteering, local donations, and community partnerships, our team works to support these organizations that keep our neighbors and communities nourished!

Want to join the action today? Here are a few ways you can support your local food banks:
🥫Donate: You can donate funds or drop off shelf-stable items like canned proteins and vegetables, beans, and more!
🤝Volunteer: You can volunteer at your local food bank to help sort incoming donations, pack food boxes, or deliver meals locally

As the days start to get shorter across the Northeast, visibility on roadway construction sites becomes even more critical. Safety in these areas requires increased awareness from both workers and drivers.

Our teams take proactive precautions to maintain a safe work environment by wearing highly visible gear, setting up proper signage and barriers, and utilizing flaggers where needed. Here are a few ways you can help keep both our crews and your fellow motorists safe this fall:

📵 Eliminate distractions and keep your eyes on the road
💡 Switch to low beams when approaching work zones so high-beam glare does not temporarily blind the workers or other oncoming drivers
🚗 Look beyond your headlights and adjust your speed based on available light, not just posted speed limits
✨ Watch for reflective materials and scan actively for reflective stripping on vests and signage
🚚 Give large equipment and hauling trucks extra space to maneuver during reduced visibility hours

Remember to remove distractions, slow down, dim your high beams around crews, and help us ensure "Everyone Goes Home Safely, Every Day"!

This week, we recognize Truck Driver Appreciation Week, hosted by the American Trucking Associations. As the week comes to a close, we want to thank all professional truck drivers, including our CDL drivers, hired haulers, and drivers across the industry for their dedication and commitment to safety.
