Sun & shade changes throughout the season so it is important to observe how the sun behaves in your growing space.

These beds in my yard get less than 6 hours of sun in the peak of summer but more than 8 hours in the spring when trees are without leaves.

Knowing this helps me maximize the amount of food I can get out of this space. The summer squash I grow here produces a small amount of fruits but the lettuce grows very vigorously!

When it comes to food preservation, do what works for you and your family! You don’t need to do it all.

Over time, we learn what works for us. One year, we had about 20 quarts of pickles that never got eaten. So this year, I grew just one cucumber plant and ate most fresh!

Other preservation tricks that work best for our family:

❄️ Freezing is preferred to canning. It maintains a higher level of nutrition and it’s less time consuming!

🥫I only do water bath canning. No pressure canning for me.

🧅I prefer to grow a lot of crops that have a longer storage life: onions, potatoes, winter squash, beets, and carrots!

I’m curious to know what works for you! Let me know in the comments!

Direct Seed: To plant seeds directly in the soil of the garden. Where you plant the seeds is where they will stay to grow and mature until harvest.

Transplant: To plant already developed plants from one area (usually a small pot) to another.

Knowing what plants to direct seed versus transplant will help you expand how much you are able to grow in your area.

I thought this clip was worth sharing and I did not want to give anymore of my time or energy to it.

Posting can be so exhausting for me! That's because I spend time editing and trying to make it perfect. I'm mostly concerned about delivering clear and effective content. Sometimes I don't like the way I look but that never stops me from posting, if it did, I would never post!

The good stuff you see on here comes from my amazing social media manager. She encourages me to post inbetween her posts and reminds me that people appreciate and follow authenticity. She really believes in me and who I am. She says I dont need to take all this time editing and making it perfect.

So here you go!

When is the last day to plant these seeds?

Find your first frost date.
Then, subtract the days to harvest from that first frost date.

Days to Harvest:
Carrots: 70 days
Beets: 50 days
Turnips: 40 days
Radishes: 28 days
Lettuce: 21 days
Spinach: 21 days

For example, the average first frost date in Atlanta, GA is 11/3. If I want to plant turnips, I need to by Thursday, September 24.

Days to harvest are not exact and reflect ideal growing conditions like 6-8 hours of sunlight daily!

The biggest issue most of my clients have with pests is identification.

You have to train your eye to not only see the pest itself but notice evidence of a pest early presence like plant damage.

Awareness is the first step, so get out there and observe your garden very closely. With more practice, you’ll start seeing pests early and often.

Let me know what you find!
