Day 2: Around 1850 — The Front Porch Era

🇺🇸 America 250: Before the Back Patio… There Was the Front Porch 🇺🇸

By the mid-1800s, Americans were beginning to create dedicated spaces to gather outside their homes. While today’s patios feature pavers, fire pits, and outdoor kitchens, families in the 1850s gathered on wide wooden porches, around picnic tables, and in their yards after long days of work.

The front porch became America’s original outdoor living room.

It was where neighbors visited, children played, stories were shared, and families spent evenings watching the sun go down.

Some things have changed over the last 250 years:

🏡 The design of our outdoor spaces

But some things never change:
❤️ Family
🤝 Friendship

🇺🇸 America 250: Before the Back Patio 🇺🇸

Today, we step back 250 years to imagine what “hanging out on the back patio” looked like in 1776.

Spoiler alert: there were no pavers, no pergolas, no outdoor kitchens, and definitely no propane fire pits. 😄

Instead, families gathered around simple wooden tables, cooking fires, and packed-earth spaces outside their homes. They shared meals, told stories, celebrated milestones, and ended long days together under the same stars we enjoy today.

While outdoor living spaces have evolved tremendously over the last 250 years, one thing hasn’t changed:

🏡 Home has always been about gathering.
❤️ Family has always been about connection.
🔥 And the best memories have always been made around a shared space.

As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, we’re taking a look back at the evolution of outdoor gathering spaces and how they’ve transformed into the patios, fire pits, and backyard retreats we enjoy today.

This project wasn’t just about building a patio…

It was about creating a space where life happens.

The rich wood tones of the deck paired with the beautiful paver design create the perfect blend of warmth, elegance, and function. And that fire pit? 🔥 It’s ready to become the heart of every gathering.

Reports out of Ohio this week confirm…
the Easter Bunny has officially gone back into hiding.

After briefly emerging for spring 🌷
he was last seen hopping…
straight back into a snowbank. 😅

Only in Ohio can you:

🌞 Wake up in spring
🌧️ Hit rain by lunch
❄️ And question all your life choices by dinner

For us in paving… it’s basically a weather rollercoaster 🎢

One day we’re ready to roll.
Next day… we’re watching the forecast like 👀

But hey—that’s Ohio.

We’ll be ready when it decides what season it wants to be 💪

Until then…
we’ll keep the crews ready
and the Easter Bunny on standby 🐰😂
