Most people call all of them “bees,” but the nest can tell you a lot about what you're dealing with.

Yellowjackets often have hidden nests with steady traffic through one small opening. Bald-faced hornets build large, enclosed gray paper nests. Paper wasps build smaller, open paper combs under eaves and other protected areas.

Late summer is peak season, with large colonies and plenty of activity.

Yellowjackets don’t always nest high up where you can see them. Sometimes they are in soffits, inside walls, and even beneath your feet!

This customer called after being stung several times without finding the nest!

Ground nests can be easy to miss until you are too close, and then it’s too late! If you’re seeing Yellowjacket traffic in your yard keep your distance and give us a call!

🐝 Know Your Hornets & Yellowjackets

Same sting. Different insects. Same problems! Late summer and fall is when these stinging insects are at their most active.

⚫Bald-Faced Hornet
Black and white. Builds large, gray, paper nests that are often found in trees, shrubs, or under eaves.

🟡 Yellowjacket
Yellow and black. Often nests underground or inside wall voids, but can also build paper nests in trees, under decks, or under eaves.

Both can aggressively defend their nest if disturbed.

⚠️ Don’t spray or disturb a nest yourself. Agitating a nest can trigger a swarm of defensive insects.

🐝 Bees in the Wall by Your Front Door? These aren’t honeybees. They’re yellowjackets, and they were slipping in and out of a small opening in this stacked-stone wall, right next to the front door.
That difference matters. Yellowjackets can be aggressive, and unlike honeybees, they can sting repeatedly. A nest this close to a doorway is one you want handled before someone gets stung.
If you see yellowjackets repeatedly going in and out of a hole, crack, or gap around your home, don’t disturb it or spray it yourself. That can quickly turn into a swarm.
Keep your distance and call a professional to identify the activity and handle it safely.

Holy mackerel! Look at the size of this thing. That’s a bald-faced hornet nest we just took down off a shed right here in Ringwood. A nest that big can hold several hundred hornets.
