We got to work on this awesome elm tree at oaks park this morning! Elms are susceptible to a deadly fungus that causes Dutch elm disease, so we treated this tree with a systemic fungicide to prevent any infections for the next 3 years. This tree took up over 60 gallons of the fungicide solution in only an hour and a half!

Trunk injections are a really useful method of treatment because it uses the tree's vascular system to transport the chemical throughout the canopy, giving us excellent coverage of the entire tree. Injections also keep all the chemicals inside the tree, so there's no overspray or excess chemical going out into the environment like there would be with spraying a tree this size.

This Douglas fir tree had a velvet top fungus conk around the base and some pitching on the trunk, indicating potential decay and instability below ground. We used our air knife to excavate the root collar to allow the consulting arborist to inspect the buttress roots for decay and make a thorough assessment of its stability.

He didn't find significant decay or other signs of instability, so the tree will live another day!

A class of students visited Arbor Ascent HQ this morning for a field trip! They are taking an Arboriculture/Plant Health Care class and came out to see the shop and get hands on experience diagnosing and treating biotic and abiotic plant problems. I think their favorite part was using the air knife to excavate soil from around tree roots without damaging the roots.

It was great to see this class so enthusiastic about trees, plant health care, and a career in this industry. It was an honor to be a little part of their education. The future is looking bright! 😎

One of our customers wants to build an ADU next to this big but doesn't want to lose the tree and all the benefits it provides. Sound impossible? It's not!

We excavated a trench with our to expose the roots without damaging them so that the architect and consulting arborist can map the location of the major roots and design a compatible foundation for the new building.

Happy Arbor Day! If you're planting a tree today (or any other day), don't forget about the trunk flare. A lot of trees come from the nursery with the trunk flare buried several inches too deep, and even have roots that are growing around the trunk and can eventually choke the tree. A buried root flare and girdling roots are some of the most common causes of sick or declining trees that we see, and open the door for pests and diseases to attack the tree.

We used our air knife to help some of the city's struggling trees on Willamette Falls Drive this week. Nurseries sometimes ship trees with root defects that can put pressure on the tree's trunk below ground and cause structural and health issues and ultimately kill the tree if not corrected. Our air knife lets us dig around the trees and see what's going on underground without damaging the tree trunk or roots so we can make corrective pruning cuts where necessary.

Out of sight doesn't mean out of mind at Arbor Ascent.

Thanks to the City of West Linn for hiring us to plant these trees at Tanner Creek park. We planted five giant sequoia trees at Skyline Ridge park for the city last week too!

We spent the day volunteering at Willamette National Veterans Cemetery with several other local arborists, pruning the trees to remove hazardous and structurally weak branches. We are proud to give back to the families and visitors of the men and women that served our country who now rest there.
