It began with almost nothing. A little puddle near the base of the unit. They mopped it up and carried on with their day. Month after month, same thing.
What was actually happening: the defrost drain line was blocked. Water that should have gone to the evaporation pan had nowhere to go, so it spilled inside the cabinet and soaked the steel frame underneath. Slowly, silently, the metal corroded until there was nothing left holding the unit together.
Clearing that drain line is half an hour of work. Waiting cost them the entire refrigerator.
Catch it early. Look for:
• Puddles near or under the unit
• Ice sheets forming across the freezer floor
• Dampness along the back panel
• A stale, musty odor when you open the door

Sometimes the reason a refrigerator stops cooling has nothing to do with the compressor or the sealed system. It's the door.
If a door sits slightly open, or the gasket has hardened and lost its grip, warm humid air flows into the cabinet all day long. That moisture freezes on the evaporator, the ice sheet grows until air can no longer circulate, and the compressor keeps running while the temperature never drops.
