How to Maintain Thermofoil Cabinets After Refacing

The main rule: avoid prolonged heat exposure directly on the surface. Stovetop steam vented toward the cabinet face softens the adhesive over time. A range hood that directs steam away from the cabinets is the most effective preventive measure.

For cleaning: a soft cloth with mild soap and water. Avoid abrasive scrubbers, solvent-based cleaners, and anything containing bleach.

What to Expect During a Cabinet Refacing Project

On day one, the Kitchen Cabinet Guys crew removes all cabinet doors and drawer fronts. The doors go to the West Chicago facility for refacing.

While the doors are off-site, the on-site crew works the cabinet boxes: removing the old finish from all face surfaces, prepping and cleaning them, applying adhesive, and applying the new thermofoil material to all visible faces and frames.

When the doors come back, they go on the boxes with new hardware. A standard kitchen is usable again by day three to five.

What you will not see: demolition, dumpsters, or missing cabinets.

Cabinet refacing is a surface fix. That's its strength and its limitation. It works when the structure underneath is solid and stops making sense when it isn't. Five checks that tell you which side your kitchen is on.

1. The box holds its shape: Open a cabinet and look inside: No water stains, no swelling at the base, no warped side walls. A structurally sound box is the core requirement for refacing.
2. The doors are worn but the substrate is intact: Peeling thermofoil, faded paint, scratched laminate — the surface damage doesn't matter. The MDF or wood layer underneath does. If the core isn't rotted or delaminating, the door can be refaced.
3. The layout still works for you; Refacing changes the surface finish, not the cabinet structure or footprint. If the kitchen functions well and just looks wrong, that's exactly the gap refacing closes.
4. The face frames are flush and secure: The face frame is the border around each cabinet opening. It needs to be level, attached, and flat against the wall. A buckled or detached face frame signals a box problem, not just a finish problem.
