Do you bag them or mulch them? I get asked this every October.

Here’s the honest answer. If it’s a light layer, mulch them. Run the mower over it a couple times and the pieces drop down between the grass blades and break down over the winter. That’s free fertilizer and your lawn is better for it in spring.

If it’s a thick layer, you have to get it off. Mulching a heavy mat just leaves a heavy mat in smaller pieces, and it still smothers the grass under it. The way to tell is simple. If you can’t see grass through it, it’s too thick to mulch.

The leaves on the lawn are the ones everybody worries about. The ones that actually cause problems are the ones you don’t see.

Leaves packed into the gutters freeze solid in January and back water up under the shingles. Leaves piled against the foundation hold moisture against the house all winter and give mice a place to live 2 feet from your basement. Leaves jammed in the bed corners rot into a mat that nothing grows through in spring.

When we do a fall cleanup we hit all of it, not just the open lawn. Gutters, beds, corners, around the AC unit, along the fence. If you want it done once and done right, send me a message.

I am seeing this all over West Chester right now.

Left side is what happens when leaves sit all fall. They get wet, they mat down, and they smother the lawn. Come April, that is a dead patch.

Right side is the same yard after a fall cleanup. Takes an afternoon, saves you a spring of reseeding.

Everybody thinks about the walkway in April or May, but then the summer gets away from you and by August you figure you’ll just deal with it next year.

Here’s the thing. Fall is actually the better time to build. The ground isn’t baked, the plants we put in around it settle in over the winter instead of fighting the heat, and our schedule opens up once the mowing season winds down. You’re not waiting 6 weeks to get on the calendar like you would in spring.

“It came up fast, and then it died off.”

I hear that about seeding all the time. You bought the bag, which is not cheap, you gave up a Saturday walking the yard with a spreader, you watered it every day like you were supposed to. And it worked. Green came in within 2 weeks and you felt pretty good about it. Then it thinned right back out, and by spring you were staring at the same bare spots you’ve been staring at for years.

Here’s what happened. Seed will germinate on almost anything as long as you keep it wet, which is why it came up so fast. But germinating and rooting are 2 different things. The roots went down a couple inches, hit clay that got packed hard all summer sitting on subsoil the builder crushed flat before your house was ever framed, and stopped right there.

That’s why we aerate before we seed. Pull the plugs, open the ground up, let the seed get down where the roots can actually hold. The window for that closes with the first hard frost, so if you’ve been thinking about it, now’s the time. Message me and I’ll come look at the yard.

The leaves are coming down now and in 2 weeks they’ll be down all at once. Here’s the part that matters for your lawn. A thin layer is fine, you can mow right over it and the grass is better for it. But once they pile up thick and get rained on, they mat down and smother everything under them. That’s where the dead patches you’ll be looking at in April come from.

This is one of our fall cleanups. Beds cleared, lawn raked and hauled, nothing left sitting against the house or in the corners where it rots all winter. We take it all with us, so you’re not stuffing 30 paper bags on a Sunday.
