🐻🌿 A little bear awareness for our Weeki Wachee vacationers…
Recent bear sightings are a reminder that we share this beautiful area with wildlife whose home extends well beyond the boundaries of our preserves.
Extreme rainfall can flood low-lying habitat, change access to food and shelter, and push wildlife toward higher, drier ground—including land where we’ve built our homes. That may be contributing to the bears we’re seeing, although rainfall alone hasn’t been confirmed as the cause. Bears also roam in search of food, and accessible garbage or pet food can encourage them to linger.
The land we occupy is part of their habitat, too. Sharing it responsibly means showing compassion and keeping a safe distance.
If you encounter a bear:
🐾 Give it plenty of space. Never feed it or attempt to approach it.
Help prevent repeat visits by securing garbage, bringing pet food indoors, removing bird feeders when bears are nearby, and cleaning grills.
If a bear threatens people or pets, or causes property damage, contact FWC at 888-404-3922. For an immediate emergency, call 911.
We can appreciate our wild neighbors without inviting them to dinner. Give them space, keep food secured, and help keep Weeki Wachee safe for everyone.
