Why Most Retaining Walls Fail in Minnesota

Most retaining walls in Minnesota don’t fail because of the block.

They fail because of what’s underneath.

Freeze/thaw cycles here are brutal. If the base isn’t deep enough, properly compacted, and drained correctly — the wall will move. It’s not a matter of if, it’s when.

We tear out walls every year that are only 5–10 years old because the prep work was skipped.

In Minnesota, excavation depth, base material, and drainage matter more than the brand of block.

If your wall is:
• Leaning
• Separating
• Bulging
• Holding water behind it

It’s usually a foundation issue.
