This week’s species spotlight is on a flower that beckons in the fall weather with its cheerful color!
Narrow-leaved Sunflower, scientifically known as Helianthus angustifolius, is an herbaceous perennial in the daisy family that blooms large yellow flowers from fall to the first frost! This species is reminiscent of the summer sun and looks gorgeous backlit by late blooming purple flowers such as many of our native asters.
Naturally found in forest openings, swamps, wet meadows, savannas and floodplains, Narrow-leaved Sunflower prefers part to full shade and medium to moist soils. Narrow-leaved Sunflower is the perfect species for a pollinator garden, rain garden or woodland planting that you are looking to add a little of fall color to.
Narrow-leaved sunflower is also an important plant for a variety of pollinators who are attracted to the blooms and native birds who are attracted to the seed heads in late fall and winter. In other words they make for a great natural bird feeder! Narrow-leaved Sunflower is also a larval host for the beautiful Silvery Checkerspot.
