Meet the Bigleaf Magnolia (Magnolia macrophylla) — one of Alabama's most impressive native trees!
With leaves up to 30 inches long and fragrant blooms nearly a foot across, the Bigleaf Magnolia holds two records no other North American tree can claim: the largest simple leaf AND the largest single flower of any native species on the continent.
First discovered right here in Alabama back in 1775, this deciduous beauty thrives in our climate — loving partial shade, sloped yards, and the warm Southern seasons. It puts on a show from spring through fall, and its larger-than-life presence makes it a true conversation piece wherever it grows.
If you ever come across a Bigleaf Magnolia on a hike or tucked into a wooded hillside — stop and take it in. You're in the presence of something truly special.

Meet your new favorite native shrub — Sweetshrub (Calycanthus floridus), aka Carolina Allspice! This southeastern native is basically a bouquet, a spice rack, and a pollinator magnet all rolled into one gorgeous plant. Low-maintenance, deer-resistant, and absolutely delightful — your nose will thank you.

Gardenia season is one of the best parts of late spring here in Auburn! Few plants can match the fragrance of a gardenia in full bloom — rich, sweet, and impossible to miss when you walk by.

One thing you may notice this time of year with your gardenias is some yellowing leaves during heavy bloom cycles. In most cases, that’s completely normal! Gardenias put a tremendous amount of energy into producing blooms and fragrance, so it’s common for older leaves to yellow and drop as the plant focuses its resources on flowering.

For us, that’s just another sign that gardenia season has officially arrived. 🌿🤍

Lake Martin’s tiniest little visitors are out doing some very important work! Hummingbirds aren’t just fun to watch — they’re important pollinators helping native plants thrive all summer long. One way to promote hummingbird activity in your landscape is to place feeders!

A few notes if you’re planning to place feeders:

>Freshness matters, especially in the Alabama heat. Make sure to clean and refill your feeder every couple of days to keep things healthy for our tiny friends.

>Red food dye is not required to attract hummingbirds and can potentially harm birds, so it’s best to steer clear and stick with a simple syrup of 1 part white sugar to 4 parts water.

>When placing a feeder, make sure to set it 10–15 ft away from large windows so these tiny flyers stay safe — and your glass too :)

Its officially hydrangea season! Have you ever wondered why some hydrangeas bloom different colors? Its science!!!

Hydrangea macrophylla blooms are one of the easiest ways to see soil chemistry in action. More acidic soils tend to produce blue blooms, while higher pH soils lead to pink blooms.

So, how do you change your soil pH?? It's simple: if your blooms are pink but you want them to be blue, try adding a soil acidifier around the base of your plant and watering it in. If you want them to be pink, add a garden lime instead.

(Note that the transformation may take a year or so to take effect)

Luxury landscapes are built in the details! We had a great day of pruning last week at this beautiful property in Auburn. Spring pruning does more than improve the look of a landscape in real time— it helps build healthier, stronger growth for the seasons ahead. Proper pruning encourages structure, reduces future stress on plants, and keeps the landscape thriving year after year. We cannot wait to see how this landscape continues to thrive!

He leads by example every day, and we're grateful for all he's done for our team. Congratulations on 20 years, Charlie - this milestone is worthy of celebration!

Some clients come to us with a Pinterest board. This one came back from a European garden tour with a vision.
That large arched window needed a focal point. We centered a cast concrete fountain in the herringbone brick niche, flanked it with Lomandra Breeze, and planted Scent Amazing Gardenias around the base so the space works on every level. You see it from inside the bedroom. You hear and smell it from the screened in outdoor living area.
