Madison friends and homeowners,

On January 14, 2025, my dad, Peter Cherek, passed away from heart failure.

He carried Cherek Painting forward for more than 20 years after taking it over from my grandfather. The company we have today stands on three generations of craftsmanship, long days, and a commitment to doing the job right.

As I step into leading the company forward, I’ve been thinking deeply about what legacy really means.

To me, it means more than painting walls.
It means showing up for the community that has supported our family for decades.

That’s why we’re launching a limited-time initiative called “Painting the Bigger Picture.”

Here’s how it works:

If you make a $50 donation to the American Heart Association and supply the paint (1 gallon for bathrooms, 2 gallons for bedrooms), we will paint one bedroom or bathroom free of charge within our service guidelines.

This initiative is my way of:

• Honoring my dad
• Supporting heart health research
• Helping homeowners who may have been putting off refreshing a room

❄️ Winter Salt: The Silent Threat to Your Driveway

As temperatures drop and ice forms, many homeowners reach for rock salt without thinking twice. But that quick fix could be costing you thousands in driveway damage.

How Salt Destroys Your Pavement

Rock salt doesn't just melt ice—it actively breaks down your driveway:

The Freeze-Thaw Cycle: Salt melts snow and ice, creating water that seeps into tiny cracks in your asphalt or concrete. When temperatures drop again, that water freezes and expands, making those cracks wider and deeper. Repeat this cycle all winter, and small cracks become major problems.

Surface Deterioration: Salt is corrosive. It eats away at the binders that hold asphalt together and degrades the surface of concrete, causing scaling, pitting, and that characteristic flaky, deteriorated appearance.

Accelerated Aging: What should be minor wear over years becomes significant damage in a single harsh winter.

Protect Your Investment This Winter

✅ Use salt alternatives - Calcium magnesium acetate or sand provide traction without the chemical damage

✅ Apply sealcoating before winter - A quality sealant creates a protective barrier against salt and moisture

✅ Shovel early and often - The less ice forms, the less salt you'll need

✅ Rinse when possible - On warmer days, hosing off salt residue reduces long-term damage

✅ Fill cracks now - Don't let small cracks become big problems when water freezes inside them
