Elizabeth Laska never pictured herself in the construction business, but she took a job scheduling gas meter replacements to help her pay for grad school. Over time, she found that she really enjoyed the work and decided to forgo grad school to continue working in the industry.

Today she works as an Assistant Project Manager for Five Star’s Fiber division. In this role, Elizabeth works to ensure that our in-house and subcontractor crews have the most up-to-date information for each job. This involves checking design specs, dealing with permits, managing billing, and communicating with stakeholders across the organization.

Elizabeth loves the challenge that comes with Project Management. “When problems do come up, whatever they may be, it is very satisfying being able to work with all the different resources (people and/or software platforms) available to me in order to find solutions to those problems,” she said.

If you’re interested in pursuing a career in Project Management, Elizabeth had the following advice, “Make sure you know how to teach someone something—and teach them well. They don’t know the vision you have in your head, so you need to be able to show them with clear steps and expectations.”

In honor of Careers in Construction Month, we are highlighting some of the many unique and interesting positions our industry has to offer.

Kyle Niles didn’t start out in construction. In fact, for several years, he worked in Plant Maintenance. Kyle was interested in a career change and, after a relative told him about Five Star, he decided to try his hand at construction.

Today, Kyle is a General Foreman, responsible for keeping all projects organized and on schedule. Some of his daily duties include reviewing prints for accuracy, submitting start notices, ensuring that job sites are properly marked, and supporting the crews with any day-to-day job issues.

“After seven years in my previous career, I decided to take a chance and join Five Star,” Kyle said, “Looking back, I’m glad I made that decision.”

“If you’re looking for a career where you can work hard, see what you accomplished at the end of the day, and take pride in what you helped build, utility construction is a great opportunity.”

Our employee Richard John recently attended Geospatial Professional Network's GIS-Pro Annual Conference for geospatial professionals. As an ARC GIS Specialist, Richard creates 2D and 3D interactive maps that are used by field crews, customers, and project management staff.

The conference provides specialists like Richard with the opportunity to stay current on industry trends, learn about innovative GIS applications, and gain fresh ideas from a diverse group of industry professionals.

“The conference was exhilarating and stimulating,” Richard said. “Getting to know the people, their background, and their applications was truly phenomenal. It has not only brought new ideas to me, but to the business, and GIS in general. This is truly a great community to be a part off.”

At Five Star, we are committed to developing our people through events like the GIS-Pro Conference, because when one of us grows, the whole team gets stronger.

In our line of work, nobody succeeds alone.

Every trench, bore, and tie-in depends on a crew that looks out for each other, from watching each other's backs around equipment to sharing what they know with the newest person on site.

That's what inclusion looks like on a jobsite: everyone safe, everyone heard, everyone part of the team.

Happy Construction Inclusion Week.

Five Star recently took part as a major sponsor of the Alliant Energy 20th Annual Drive Out Hunger Charity Golf Event, held at the Geneva National Resort & Club in Lake Geneva, WI.

This event helps fight food insecurity by supporting food banks located across Iowa and Wisconsin. The event itself raised more than $1 million to help support families and individuals facing hunger. In addition to sponsoring the event, five of our employees took part as golfers.

Special thanks to both Alliant Energy and the Grand Geneva Resort and Spa for hosting the event and to everyone who showed up to support this very worthy cause.

Every morning, crews check their equipment before the work starts. Fluids, hoses, guards. These small check ins help prevent big problems.

This World Mental Health Day, we're asking: when's the last time you did a check in with yourself?

Are you sleeping? Spending time with the people who matter to you? Carrying something you haven't told anyone about?

Mental health doesn't usually fail all at once. It wears down a little at a time, just like anything else. Catching it early helps makes all the difference.

Take five minutes today. Check yourself. Then check on someone else.

There's no single path into utility construction.

Some of our team came straight from high school. Some switched careers. Some started as laborers and now run crews. Some never pictured themselves in construction at all.

What they share: a willingness to learn and a team that's willing to teach.

Celebrate Construction Week by starting something new. 👷
