There are moments in every home that you don't realize are important until years later.

The height marks on the pantry wall.

One of the hardest parts of a remodeling project isn't the demolition.

It's the waiting.

Waiting for materials.
Waiting for inspections.
Waiting for your house to feel like home again.

But then there's that moment when everything finally comes together.

In this photo me and my family, behind us, you'll see a niche we built into the wall. The original plan was to hang artwork there (which is what we have now), but I've also been toying with the idea of turning it into a giant photo display with a picture light above it.

I love adding little details like that.

A niche isn't just a cutout in a wall. It's an opportunity to make a space feel intentional. To create a place that tells your story instead of leaving behind just another blank wall.

Those are the details that often become my favorite part of a project... and they're usually worth the wait.

One of the things I love most about summer in Minnesota is how the Fourth of July seems to bring everyone outside.

Driveways become gathering places.
Backyards fill with lawn chairs.
The grill is going all afternoon.
Kids are running through the yard while someone inevitably asks, "Who's ready for another burger?"

It's funny how a home can feel different on days like today.

Sometimes, it truly is the simple stuff.

It's the drawer that finally opens without hitting another door.

It's the custom closet that can hold all of your stuff.

The outlet that's exactly where you need it.

The extra storage you didn't know was possible.

The shower niche that keeps clutter off every ledge.

The mudroom bench that actually fits everyone's boots.

The drop zone for all the electronics and keys.

Those little details rarely make the highlight reel, but they're often the things homeowners appreciate most after the project is finished.

Can I tell you something I hear all the time?

"I'm scared to commit to anything. What if I mess it up?"

I hear it from almost every homeowner we sit down with. And I want you to know, that fear is completely valid.

Remodeling is a big decision. You're making choices that are going to live in your home for years, sometimes decades. Of course it feels scary.

Here's what I also want you to know: even I have gotten it wrong.

When we built our house in 2020, I thought I knew exactly what I wanted. And then came the wet bar.

Folks, I am kind of over the wet bar.

That sink is rarely used. Maybe to wash off the kids' paint brushes or to dump out a flat can of pop. Otherwise, we have never made drinks down there. Not once. In hindsight, I wish I had thought more carefully about how we'd actually use that space because that money could have gone toward a built-in sauna instead!

Do I regret it? A little. But here's the thing, it's not permanent. We could demo it tomorrow and build exactly what we actually want.

And that's the point.

That "oh no" moment taught me to slow down with every single client who sits across from me. To ask better questions. To think about how you'll live in a space, not just how it'll look on day one.

You don't have to get it right. You just have to find the right people to get it right with you.
