Dear neighbor,
The reason for our letter today is in regard to the recent hail storm that damaged your neighborhood. Your area is already swarming with roofers looking to cash in on your misfortune. Some of them will be reputable companies, but unfortunately, many will not. Every year we hear about homeowners who have gotten themselves into trouble by using companies who will attempt to defraud the insurance companies by submitting fraudulent invoices for work not completed. For most homeowners, the process of having their insurance company replace a roof under the provisions of their policy is unfamiliar and confusing, so they make the mistake of trusting some stranger who comes to their door and promises to pay their deductible and to handle their claim.
If you don’t mind, we would like to give you some advice.
Don’t sign anything with someone who comes to your door. This is the single best way to avoid fraud. Scammers with ask for your signature or “authorization” to either inspect your roof or meet with your insurance adjuster. What you are signing is a contract for them to replace your roof if the insurance company approves it.
SLOW DOWN, Your insurance company allows up to a year for you to file a claim and complete the work. Exception: If you still have a wood shake roof and you think it is damaged, have it checked out quickly since the evidence of damage diminishes with time.
Beware of companies who say they will pay some or all of your deductible. It is insurance fraud, and it’s a good way to get your policy dropped. It is against the law to pay or waive a deductible.
Don’t ever give a company money until materials are delivered and or the job is completed. If they need your money to buy materials, it’s a good sign that they are not financially stable, and you may end up with a contractor’s lien on your home.
