Today’s project is a little different than our usual chimney repairs, stonework, and paver installs.

We’re out in S**o, Maine, removing an old chimney below the roofline. The chimney is no longer in use, so rather than repair it, we’re safely demoing and removing it to make way for a clean roof repair.

Once we’re finished, the roofer will come in tomorrow to plywood and shingle over the opening, leaving the home weather-tight and the roof looking right.
No matter the size or scope of the masonry project, HDKIII Masonry is ready to help.

Another chimney rebuild completed in Biddeford, Maine.
This chimney, built more than 20 years ago, had failing concrete block. We carefully dismantled it to just below the roofline, preserved the existing stainless-steel liner, and rebuilt it to the original specifications—with a stronger, more durable structure for the years ahead.
The roofing crew followed behind us to replace the shingles, and it was great to hear that our flashing work made their portion of the project easier. Proper flashing and a clean tie-in between masonry and roofing matter.
Once the rebuild was complete, we waterproofed the entire chimney to help protect the new masonry from moisture intrusion.
We say it often because it’s true: waterproofing is one of the most cost-effective ways to protect a chimney. Porous materials such as concrete block and certain brick absorb water, which can lead to cracking, spalling, and premature deterioration through seasonal freeze-thaw cycles.
Waterproofing will not prevent every future repair, but it is an affordable step that can help keep your chimney watertight and extend its service life.

Just finished a chimney repoint for a local homeowner—and while we were up there, we spotted small tears in the old flashing. Instead of just patching over it, we removed the damaged flashing and installed new flashing the proper way.
Key detail: we did not nail the flashing to the roof. Flashing needs to expand and contract with heat and cold. Nailing it down locks it in place, which can lead to tears, leaks, and premature failure.
Our approach:
• Remove old, damaged flashing
• Clean and prep the chimney/roof junction
• Install new step and counter flashing
• Secure flashing to the chimney (not the roof deck) so it can move with temperature changes
• Seal edges properly for a watertight finish
The result? A stronger chimney and a flashing system built to last, not just to look good today.
If your chimney has been repointed before but still leaks, the flashing might be the real issue.

Another solid rebuild wrapped up today.
Homeowner handled the demo themselves to save some money, and we came in to bring it back to life the right way. Rebuilt to original specs, finished with a fresh concrete wash, installed a new stainless steel cap, and sealed everything for long-term protection.
This is a great example of how teamwork can keep costs down without cutting corners on quality. If you’re willing to put in some sweat upfront, we’ll make sure the finished product is built to last.

We recently repointed a customer’s fireplace firebox after finding empty mortar joints. This isn’t just about looks — it’s a critical safety issue.
Why repointing empty joints is necessary:
• Safety: Empty joints allow heat to escape the firebox, potentially damaging surrounding structure and creating fire hazards
• Tenting: We fully tent the work area to prevent dust from getting all over your house
• Proper material: We use Heat Stop masonry cement, the only correct product for high-heat fireplace repointing
Don’t wait for empty joints to become a dangerous or costly problem.

Keep your chimney working safely before small problems turn into expensive repairs.
At HDKIII Masonry, we recently replaced over 40 deteriorated bricks on a chimney where maintenance was delayed until severe spalling occurred. When bricks start breaking down like that, it is often a sign of long-term moisture damage and structural stress.
One common issue we see is improper materials inside chimneys. Wood and insulation do not belong there. These materials can trap and absorb moisture, accelerating brick decay, and weakening the structure.
Regular inspections and early repairs can save you thousands and extend the life of your chimney.
If your chimney is showing signs of wear, cracking, or flaking bricks, now is the time to act. HDKIII Masonry delivers reliable, professional repairs that protect your home and investment.
