A little shaping, some natural rock, a few different levels, and a good plan can completely change how you use a space.

This backyard went from a pretty ordinary patch of side yard to a place where you can sit and enjoy the view, add flowers or herbs, and actually spend some time outside.

Sometimes you don't need more yard. You just need to make better use of the yard you have.

Here’s a sweet little rock garden we built for some clients.

Take a prime spot in the yard, give it some shape and a couple of different levels, add some beautiful natural rock borders and a good layer of rich topsoil, and suddenly you’ve got a garden with a whole lot more potential!

Flowers, herbs, vegetables, or whatever you want to grow. And put a fire pit nearby, and you’ve got a pretty great spot to sit, enjoy the view, and take in the smell of everything growing around you.

Just a few changes to the shape of a yard can make such a difference in how you can use it.

All this rain has a way of showing you where the water wants to go!

If you’ve got standing water, muddy areas, or places where runoff is cutting through the yard, fall is a good time to pay attention to it. Once winter sets in, those drainage problems aren’t going anywhere.

I’ve been doing ditch work and contouring land to help move water where it needs to go. Sometimes it’s a simple shallow channel. Other times it takes a little more digging and shaping to get things flowing properly.

The goal isn’t just to move water for one season. It’s to solve the problem in a way that works with the lay of the land and holds up over time.

A good rock waterfall is more than just stacking some rocks and running water over the top. The rocks need to be placed and shaped to direct the water, create natural-looking falls, and keep the water where it belongs.

We build these features using natural rock, working with the slope and surrounding landscape to create something that looks like it belongs there. From the placement of the larger foundation rocks to the smaller stones that help finish the edges, each piece has a purpose.

The end result is a water feature that adds movement, sound, and a natural focal point to the yard.

Before the grass goes down or the landscaping begins, the site has to be properly graded. That means correcting low spots, improving drainage, and creating a smooth, stable surface that's ready for the next phase.

This before-and-after shows just how much of a difference proper site preparation can make. Sometimes the groundwork is the transformation.

What started as a wet, muddy, uneven area is now properly graded and ready for whatever comes next. Whether it's a lush lawn, a garden, or an outdoor living space, every great landscape begins with solid site preparation and proper grading.
